Born July 8,1943, in Annapolis Valley, N.S., he was the only son of the late Trafton and Phyllis (Bent) Cann. His career as a Civil Engineer, took he and his family all over the world , but he faithfully returned to his hobby farm in Blacketts Lake whenever time allowed. He retired back to Cape Breton in the 90’s.
Don was a shining example of kindness and empathy, and had capacity of bringing joy to those around him. He had wonderful relationships with his children and grandchildren and made sure they were having a great time growing up.
Don had the most truest friends, you know who you are.
Don was widely active throughout his life and loved the outdoors. In the summer months, you could find him at the cottage playing tennis or swimming. He had a natural connection to animals and loved sharing the ‘farm’ experience with visitors of all ages.. he easily engaged with everyone and was known as ‘Farmer Don’ to many kids . Don was passionate about his huge vegetable garden , which produced too much of everything, especially rhubarb. He loved Cape Breton winters , and spent many days skiing with his buddies, or teaching others to enjoy the sport too.
Donald is survived by his wife of 51 years, Margaret Anne ( Mac Neil) Cann, his daughters, Velma (Jeroen) Vos, PEI, Virginia (Ray) Gingras, Horseshoe Valley, Ontario and son, Jonathan (Crissy) Cann, Timberlea,N.S., his grandchildren, Benjamin and Maggy Redford, Madison, Mackayla, Keera, Kody, and Kaleb Vos, Ray-Ray and Julien Gingras, Kayla, Vicki Anne and Joseph Cann, his son-in-law, Brian Redford , PEI, and nephew, Kevin Haddad (Maryellen), Northside East Bay.
Besides his parents , he was predeceased by his daughter, Vicki Cann Redford and his sister, Velma Haddad.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of 4N at the Glace Bay Hospital and 4B at the Cape Breton Regional hospital for their compassionate care during Don’s stay.
The love, encouragement and unwavering support from our friends have meant the world to us.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. Visitation and service will take place on August 2, 2025. Details will be available closer to the date.
In memory of Don, the family asks everyone to go out and do something that brings you real joy and share it with others. Approach life with an open heart, open arms and a perpetual smile just like Don did.
