Dieter Andre
mai 11, 1948 — janvier 15, 2025
Dieter August Andre passed away peacefully in Saskatoon on January 15, 2025 at the age of 76. He is survived by his son, Konrad; daughter-in-law, Michelle; and grandchildren, Helena and Ethan; and former spouse, Christina. He is also survived by extended family and friends in Saskatoon (Louis, Carol, Chris, Erica, and Jude) and Germany (niece and nephew David and Verena). He is predeceased by his father, Otto; mother, Erna; and sister, Karin.
Dieter was born on May 11, 1948 in Düsseldorf, Germany and raised in Baiersdorf, north of Nürnberg. He excelled in schooling and loved science, studying at the Max Planck Institute and the University of Göttingen, earning his PhD in physics for “Radar measurements of plasma waves in the polar ionosphere” in 1980. Thereafter, he worked for companies such as Messerschmitt and Siemens.
In 1985, he moved to Saskatoon with his young family to start a new life. He worked for the Institute of Space and Atmospheric Studies at the University of Saskatchewan for the remainder of his career, and through the Institute made a number of professional and personal connections that he cherished and would last throughout his lifetime. He was also proud to be part of the Municipal Planning Commission for many years.
Dad loved food, in particular trying out dishes and recipes from different cultures around the world, such as Japanese, Cajun, and his unique homemade pizza. Dieter loved spending time in his backyard and garden, likely one of the largest in Forest Grove, in particular growing enough potatoes to usually last all winter.
He also loved nature and the outdoors, going on many family canoe and camping trips, with a particular fondness for the calm beauty of Namekus and Kingsmere Lakes. Other passions were woodworking – he was especially proud of his homemade furniture – and he was hoping to set up his own mini-science lab in his new home later this year.
He will be missed greatly, in particular his unexpected but gentle sense of humour and conversations about travel, food, and politics. He loved his grandchildren very much, who affectionately called him “Opa!” He was so proud of each and every one of their accomplishments, in particular Helena’s dance and talking about computers and coding with Ethan. The family is grateful for the amazing care and companionship received at Luther Special Care Home over the last two years.
A service will be held in Prince Albert National Park at a later date.
