It is with saddened hearts that the family announces the passing of Derrick Bressette, Debwewe Giizhik. Sound (in the distance) from the sky, on Monday, July 28, 2025 at the age of 59. Loving father of Joseph and Julia Harper and their mother Luanna Shirt. Dear brother of Terry (Sandy) Bressette, Michele, Jennifer, Lynn Fletcher, Shawn Pouget, Ben Pouget (2021), and Sheri (1982). Treasured uncle to Douglas Tynes, Terilyn Rose Bressette, Mark, Joseph, Michael, and Melissa Stocum. Great uncle to Joseph Jr. and many other great nieces and nephews. Remembered by his aunt Sue, uncle Roger, and aunt Pauline. Predeceased by his parents Leona Bressette and Walter Williams. Derrick will be greeted by his dog Wolfgang with a wagging tail. He was loved by his many friends and family and will be remembered as selfless, eager to help anyone in any way that he could. Derrick’s culture and tradition meant everything to him. He was part of the Bear clan from Aamjiwnaang First Nation. He was always a familiar face on the Pow Wow trail, he attended many different ceremonies, and he was a talented teller of stories. Derrick was also proud to be a member of the Aamjiwnaang Ininwag and Chippewa Point drum group. He currently served as a board member of the Sarnia Lambton Native Friendship Center, and drummer of the Friendship Center drum group. His faith in the Lord was strong, and he never wavered from his belief in the Creator. Family and friends will be received at Maawn Doosh Gumig Community Centre, 1972 Virgil Ave., Sarnia, on Friday, August 1, 2025 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Maawn Doosh Gumig Community Centre on Saturday, August 2, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow in Aamjiwnaang Cemetery. Sympathy may be expressed through donations to the Aamjiwnaang Foodbank or the Aamjiwnaang Men’s Wellness Group (cheques only at the funeral home please).
