DEREK LEGGE
Suddenly on Dec 19 at HSC Derek peacefully passed away doing what he loved, telling jokes & making others laugh.
Born July 30, 1949, to parents Stephen & Marion who have pre-deceased him. He is survived by his wife Kay of 47 years and brother-in-law Doug Stewart (Kathleen), as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Derek was paraplegic since age 25 but never let it interfere with what he wanted to accomplish. He completed his BA Honours in Commerce at U of M. in 1972. He took his first professional job in Brandon as Head of Housekeeping, then moved on to become Personnel Director at Brandon General Hospital. It was in Brandon that he met his wife, Kay. They married in 1977 & moved back to Winnipeg when Derek took the job as Personnel Director at Victoria Hospital. He later moved into positions where he could make a difference in the disabled community in areas of employment, working at Equality Employment, Canadian Paraplegic Association & Federal program promoting employment of persons with disabilities. He also did much volunteer work in areas of promoting accessibility in the community for which he was honoured at Government House. He spent the majority of his professional life at the Manitoba Human Rights Commission where he worked for 17 years. He was very proud of his work there, enabling many potential complaints to be addressed & resolved in a timely fashion.
He retired at age 55 and developed an interest in woodworking, making funny wood burnt signs and crafts. He enjoyed spending time at his cottage in Spruce Sands where he built many woodworking projects like planters, lounge chairs, a garden gazebo, front & back decks & ramps.
Derek was well known for his jokes & gift of the gab, he always had funny stories to tell. When he developed renal failure, he embraced it as an opportunity to build community & bring some joy to others on dialysis who were struggling. He lived his life based on Matthew 25, v.35 & tried to help others in any way he could, with his humour, generosity and capacity to personally befriend others. He was well loved by many staff at Central Dialysis Unit who got to know him well. We are grateful for the loving care he received from the staff.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sat Jan. 4 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Stephen’s and St. Bede’s Church, at 3830 Roblin Blvd. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in Derek’s memory can be made to Spinal Cord Injury, Manitoba, Winnipeg Humane Society or Kidney Foundation of Manitoba.
