John Derek Leendert Cummings
47 years
who passed away Monday, January 20th, 2025 at the Health Science North Sudbury after a courageous battle with cancer.
Will be missed by Melissa Cummings (née Blanchard) the mother of his children. Father to Logan Blanchard (Heather), Katie Shaw (Mark), Samantha Cummings, and William Cummings. Son of John Wayne Cummings (predeceased) and Klazina Cummings Beange (née Bergwerff). Will be missed by his stepfather Terry Beange (predeceased) and stepsister Jaya (Glenn). Brother of Heather Boychuk (Brad), Leslie LeBlanc (Greg) and Marsha Cummings. Will be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Born and raised in Sudbury Ontario, Derek attended Cambrian College graduating as an Electrical Engineering Technologist/Instrumentation. He started work at Accutron in 2000.
Derek often looked back on his life with great fondness, especially when reflecting on the love and support of his parents, Wayne and Klazina. He would frequently say, “We have the best parents, and we had the best childhood.” Our loving mother and sister, Heather along with his friend Mike were by his side in his final days.
Growing up, Derek didn’t have it easy with three sisters. He was known for pestering everyone he loved relentlessly. Some of our fondest memories with Derek include the carefree days spent together on the lake—boating, fishing, and water skiing.
Derek loved driving. Cars fascinated him, and the open road was his happy place. Whether it was late-night drives or just getting behind the wheel, driving gave him a sense of freedom and joy. That passion extended to anything with wheels or motors—boats, golf carts, remote control cars—you name it. If it could move, Derek wanted to be the one driving it.
Though Derek faced struggles in his later years, he found strength in God and worked tirelessly to better himself. He was committed to his faith and his Church.
Donations in his memory can be made to the Northern Cancer Foundation- HSN Foundation or a charity of your choice. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date in the summer on Long Lake.
