Dennis Jacobsen Obituary
Poul Dennis Jacobsen passed away suddenly on January 4th, 2025, at 3:41 pm in Medassist Hospital, Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico, due to complications following a heart attack.
Dennis is survived by his loving wife, Jean, his daughters Heather (Wayne Schatz) and Miranda (Spencer Jones) and grandchildren Haley and Madison Schatz. He is also survived by his brother Jan (Elaine) Jacobsen and their children Julia (Darren) Grant and Michael Jacobsen, three great nephews, and family in Denmark, including Uncle Bjarne, Aunt Gitta (Helge) and many cousins. He was predeceased by his parents Tage and Jytte Jacobsen.
Dennis was born in Vancouver BC and his early years were spent in Burnaby, until the family moved to Mission in 1964. Following graduation from Mission Secondary School in 1973, he attended British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) and graduated in 1975 in Civil and Structural Engineering Technology. Dennis and Jean met in Grade 10 in band class and were high school sweethearts. They attended BCIT together and were married in 1975 after graduation. Their early careers took them to Penticton and then back to Abbotsford/Mission. They then moved north to Fort St John for “just two years” that turned into eleven and saw the birth of their daughters, Heather and Miranda, and where lifelong friendships were made and cherished. In 1990, they moved back to Penticton, where they spent the last 35 years.
Dennis developed a passion for technology in the early 1970’s at BCIT and was excited by the possibilities for personal computers in both business and everyday life. In the early 1980’s he developed an innovative business management software program and started his own business, Windward Software Inc. In the early days, Dennis wore every hat in the business and drove all over North America to businesses and trade shows. Before the internet and cell phones, he could often be seen pulled over at a gas station pay-phone, remotely supporting his customers. The company expanded over the years and at the time of sale in 2019, had over one hundred employees with offices in Penticton, B.C., Cebu, Philippines, Brisbane, Australia, and Chicago, USA.
Dennis was a member of Penticton Sunrise Rotary for 19 years and involved in the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. Dennis and Jean hosted students for short and extended stays in their home and became a second family to kids from all over the world. He was a strong supporter of the Dream Café in Penticton where he was Board Chair for several years and a frequent attendee of many shows. Other organizations over the years included The Executive Council (TEC), Penticton ESS, Chamber of Commerce in Penticton and Fort St John, and the former Okanagan Science and Technology Council (OSTEC).
Dennis and Jean enjoyed travelling and visited many countries around the world. In 2021, they purchased an RV and drove all over BC, Alberta, Western USA, and Mexico. Dennis became very interested in RV’s and spent hours learning about his RV and discussing future trips with Jean and friends. On their last trip, they had a wonderful trip through the Western United States and then met with several friends near the US/Mexico border. They travelled together to Guayabitos, Mexico where they were enjoying a slower pace of life at a beautiful beachside location.
Dennis will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was immensely proud of his daughters, their partners, and their chosen paths in life. He loved spending time with his granddaughters, playing board games, cards and recently chess online, where Grampa sadly timed out on January 4th.
Special thanks to the medical and nursing team at Medassist Hospital for their professionalism, skill and compassion and to Gordon and Jo-Ann Herle for their support and assistance in Mexico.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Donations in memory of Dennis may be made to Rotary International Polio Plus Fund.
