Obituary of David John Blinkhorn
In Loving Memory of David John Blinkhorn
November 1, 1947 – April 19, 2025
Born in Cape Breton, David was one of twelve children of Agnes and Arthur Blinkhorn. He is survived by his loving partner of 44 years, Irene; his cherished children Jamie, Deanna, and Vern (Veronica), and grandchildren Danna and Brayden.
David is also survived and fondly remembered by his sisters Goldie Bona, Marcella O’Brien, and Doreen Pentecost, and brothers Harry, William (Linda), Bernard (Mary Jane), and Robert (Mary). He was predeceased by his parents, and his siblings Lawrence, Mary, Shirley, and Lorraine.
David spent much of his working life on the Great Lakes freighters. He was known and appreciated for his strong work ethic, and he never hesitated to stand up for the rights and safety of himself and his fellow crew members. David often looked back on his sailing days, sharing stories, both the good and the bad, of his life on the boats.
After a workplace injury brought that chapter of his life to a close, David settled into retirement in Sutherlands River, Pictou County. He found joy in the simple things — walking in the woods, watching birds and wildlife, reading, listening to his favourite music (John Prine, Rita MacNeil, Willie Nelson, Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, and Van Morrison, to name a few), tinkering with cars, keeping the property looking neat and tidy, and visiting friends. Daily chats with buddies at Tim Hortons were a staple, and he was always waiting at home for Vern when she returned from school each day.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no formal service or ceremony. David will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
