Obituary of David Basil Nearing, Reserve Mines
It is with great sadness that the family of David Basil Nearing, age 75 of Reserve Mines, announce his passing on Wednesday, February 26th, 2025 at The New Waterford Consolidated Hospital after several months of treatment for advanced dementia.
David was born in Moncton, NB on August 18, 1949. He was the son of the late Basil and Margaret (MacDonald) Nearing.
David is survived by his best friend and loving wife Paula (Chiasson); sister Marion (Bill) Turner, Donaldston, PEI; sister-in-law Betty (Graham) Crosby, Glace Bay; brother-in-law Mark (Norma) Chiasson, Glace Bay; his uncle, Kevin MacDonald, Toronto; and aunt, Pat MacDonald, Point Edward.
Also survived by special nieces and nephews Amandah (Ryan) Woods, Megan (Jim) MacDonald, Brandon (Moira) Turner, Sarah (Paul) Magill, Thomas Nearing, Mark (May Chen) Crosby, Christina (Yves) Leroux, Joanna Crosby, Kathleen (Sean) Buchanan, and David (Sonia) Crosby; grandnieces and nephews Alistair, Aiden, Cordelia, Eleanor, Thomson, Adam, Clare, Anna, Dominic, Maxime, and Jude, with whom he took great delight in persistent joking and teasing.
David was blessed with life-long friends, Mary Anne and Ray MacAdam, Philly MacNeil, Mike Dezagiacomo, Jinky MacMillan, and many other teaching colleagues and friends.
David was predeceased by his parents, Basil and Margaret Nearing, brother Gregory (Diane Buckland), nephew David Nearing, and numerous aunts and uncles.
A graduate of St. F.X. University, David enjoyed a fulfilling career as a teacher at Bicentennial Junior High, Dartmouth; Malcolm Munroe Memorial Junior High, Sydney River; and MacLennan Junior High, Westmount. His many students will remember him fondly for his respect, great wit and wisdom.
A believer in lifelong learning, he held diplomas in Religious Education and Faith Formation and Ministry. He was active in his Parish of St. Joseph’s, and pastoral grouping of St. Francis Xavier Cabrini where he served on several committees and responded to the liturgical and educational needs of his Parish.
Active in the community, he served for a number of years as a Director of the Reserve Mines Credit Union and Tompkins Development Ltd.
David enjoyed reading, bowling in the teachers’ league, puttering in his yard, working out with his workout buddy, Henry White, walking Dominion Beach with Stevie Campbell, vacationing in Quebec City, and always stopping for a chat with the many people he knew. He will also be remembered for his collection of over 300 ties which he kept carefully bundled by colour.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay on Friday Feb. 28 from 5-8 PM.
Mass of Resurrection will take place Saturday, March 1 at 1:30 PM at Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport with Father Dan Boudreau & Fr. Bedford Doucette officiating. A reception will follow at the Reserve Mines Pensioners Club.
Interment will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, MacLeod’s Hill at a later date.
Condolences may be made to the family at www.vjmcgillivray.ca. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society.
