David P. Rogers
mars 31, 1936 — mars 11, 2025
Dave passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, March 11th, surrounded by family.
He leaves behind his wife of 62 years, Jule (McLennan), whom he loved dearly, and their three children: Susan (John), Diane (Stuart), and David (Sharlene). He was the fun-loving Pop to Stefanie (Sasha), Michael (Samantha), Tilson, Parker, Layla, and Brooke. Dave will also be remembered by his brother, Gordon (Grace), his sister-in-law Audrey (Ron, deceased) and many friends and extended family members. He was predeceased by his parents, Dean and Isabel Rogers, and his older brother, Mac (Joanne, deceased).
Born in Pembroke, Dave and his brothers had a carefree childhood, including many adventures and shenanigans along the Ottawa River. He followed family tradition by attending Acadia University at age 17 and discovered a passion for geology with a group of students who became lifelong friends. Geologists never stop looking for that big mine, and his prospecting for gold, silver, and copper took him across Canada, the US, South America, and Africa. Dave was an eternal optimist and still working on prospecting projects during his last few weeks.
Dave’s favourite place to be was sitting on the deck at the cottage—a log cabin he built in the summer of 1976. He loved his aluminum canoe that took him down the rapids, the fishing hole, and feeding the ducks. Dave and Jule moved back to the Valley full-time in 2002 to enjoy life along the Ottawa River. As a woodcarver, Dave let the wood guide his imagination to create elegant herons or delightful oddities. As a musician, his tea chest bass was always tuned to perfection when he played with the fiddle groups in Chichester, at Fort William, and down at the Pembroke waterfront.
The cottage was the gathering place for family and friends, with so many great memories—pond hockey, paddling, fishing, skiing, walks through the woods, building projects, fiddle parties, cribbage, Wizard, and “Pancakes with Pop.” Dave’s pancake breakfasts were legendary. There was always a performance, with plate-sized pancakes flying from stove to table. Bloopers happened with great laughs, and everyone quickly learned how to catch. The next generations have been well-trained, so the pancake tradition lives on.
Dave was feisty and mischievous right to the end. We are grateful for the care and compassion provided by the staff at the Pembroke Regional Hospital and the Access palliative home care team. Special thanks to Donna, whose weekly exercises and banter kept Dave active, and to Anusha, who went above and beyond finding and delivering library books he enjoyed.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Dave’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pembroke Public Library or a charity of your choice.
Arrangements entrusted to Malcolm, Deavitt & Binhammer Funeral Home, Pembroke.
