David Steele Obituary
David Michael Steele of Lethbridge, Alberta, passed away at Chinook Regional Hospital on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at the age of 53 years due to multiple organ failure caused by undiagnosed liver cancer.
He is survived by his sister Maureen (Bill) Gaehring; nephews Tyson and Jack Gaehring; aunt Kathy Weiers; as well as numerous cousins and their families on both the Steele and Weiers sides.
He was predeceased by his parents Lance and Joan Steele; infant brother Tommy Steele; grandparents Jacob and May Steele, and Fred and Gertrude Weiers; as well as many aunts and uncles on both the Steele and Weiers sides.
David, otherwise known as Dave, Davey, Diamond Dave, Steeler, and the Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla, was born on November 24, 1971, at St. Michael’s Hospital in Lethbridge, Alberta. Dave was a lifelong resident of Lethbridge, attending St. Paul’s, St. Mary’s, St. Francis and Catholic Central High School. Dave loved being in high school and hanging out with his group of friends, playing video games, listening to 80’s metal music, playing flag football, shooting hoops, and watching T.V. shows and movies from the 80’s. Truly the best decade! Dave was very proud of being “personally” invited to every CCH grad party the year he graduated and had a very memorable Kegger as his friends and fellow graduates will remember. Dave also had fun camping at Castle Falls with his friends as long as it wasn’t raining or snowing!
Dave loved NFL football, and his favorite team was the Dallas Cowboys. A highlight for Dave was travelling to Toronto with his friend Dave to watch the Bills play the Falcons. While their end zone tickets made it hard to see some of the plays, they did end up on T.V.!
Dave was a 28-year employee of London Drugs where he earned the respect and admiration of all the staff for showing up at 4 A.M. to stock the shelves and ready the store for opening. Dave loved to let the staff know what was happening in the world and the latest store or restaurant that was opening in Lethbridge. Dave also volunteered for many years at the Interfaith Food Bank. Giving back to the community was important to him as he recognized there were many people that needed help. Dave also bowled for many years at Holiday Bowl, earning trophies and making long-lasting relationships with fellow bowlers and boy could he loft the ball!
Dave was a highly principled, caring and authentic person. He was a good man. Credit for this goes to how his parents raised him and loved him unconditionally. Family was very important to Dave. He was very proud of his nephews and their accomplishments, attending awards nights, graduations and numerous sporting events to cheer them on. He introduced them to video games and board games and many hours were spent at the Gaehring’s playing Uno and Clue. It was very difficult for Dave when his parents passed away and he had to transition to living on his own. For 12 years Dave looked after his apartment (in true bachelor fashion) and took care of the family mementos.
Our only consolation to Dave’s unexpected passing is that he is reunited with his mom and dad who he missed dearly. All that knew and cared for Dave are truly heartbroken. We love you so much.
We would like to thank the EMS staff; the wonderful staff of London Drugs for their hospital visits and caring words; doctors Saleh, Olson and Barnes; the nursing staff of 4A and the ICU, especially Heather, Parm, Laurel, Mallory, Shawn and Claire; and finally, words can not express how thankful we are for Dave’s friends who shared in our disbelief and sorrow this past week: Brad and Shauna, Neil and Kaila, Mark and Kim, Dave, Bob, Darrel, Joe and Kari-Ann. Bill and I could not have gotten through this without you. You all were wonderful friends to Dave, his chosen family. Playing his favorite music, watching Baywatch on his phone with him, reminiscing about all the fun times and providing Dave support and reassurance that he was loved as his life turned upside down and then quietly and peacefully concluded.
Nighty night, sleep tight Davey.
A celebration of life will be held later in February. Flowers are respectfully declined. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Canadian Diabetes Association or to the Interfaith Food Bank.
