David Hilson “Dave” Ford
1948-2025
David Hilson Ford, 77,
of New Minas, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 14, 2025 in
the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, one week to the day after
being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
To his family, it
seems only those with the biggest hearts could ever be chosen on
Valentine’s Day.
Born in Summerside, PEI,
David was one of seven children of the late Kenneth and Mildred
(Woodside) Ford. In his younger years, he developed a passion for
running. He excelled at this, breaking several records in high school
and running continued to be a big part of much of his adult life.
Backpacking around the world with a friend at the age of 19 was also a
significant life event for him, spending time in more than 50
countries for 18 months. He’d say the things he saw and the
experiences he had shaped him for life.
Family and friend get
togethers at the cottage in Fernwood, PEI and later at Murphy Lake, NS
were very special, memorable times for him. Later in life, as he and
Terry retired, he loved looking after their home in New Minas.
Spending quiet time together, morning coffee on the deck or by the
woodstove, he enjoyed the simple things. He also had a special place
in his heart for his neighbors, including his little buddies next door
and across the street.
David earned his
teaching degree and devoted 32 years to shaping young minds at Horton
District High School and Evangeline Middle School. Those who met Dave
will never forget him as he was one of a kind. Always positive, a
great sense of humour, he loved children and life, feeling fortunate
for every day.
David will be missed
by his longtime common-law partner, Terry; children, Lori Nauss
(Darren Whynott) and Darren Ford, all of Italy Cross; Lori Ketch (Sean
Kennelly), Comox, BC and Rod Estensen, Cochrane, AB; Melissa Rogers
(Mike Frenette), Kentville; Jill (Alec) Sarty, East Tremont; seven
grandchildren, Madison, Dawson, Ethan, Kelsey, Karmin, Lindsay, and
Nova; great-grandchildren, Noah, Jax and Grace; sisters, June (Ernie)
Gallant and Betty Thompson, all of Summerside; Mary Mamay, New Minas
and Helen Brocklebank, Charlottetown; several nieces and nephews,
extended family and friends who all meant the world to
him.
In addition to his
parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Arnold and Albert as well as
brothers-in-law, Tom Mamay and Bill Brocklebank.
Cremation has taken place and at Dave’s request, there will be no
visitation or service. His wish is that the family get together to
celebrate his life at a later date. Dad would never want people to
think they had to donate money to keep his memory alive but if anyone
wishes to do so, please give to a place that has a special meaning to
you.
The family would like
to thank Dr. Mike Sinclair and the ICU staff, especially nurses
Tracey-Ann and Shannon, for their compassionate support and kindness
during this difficult time. We also want to pass on our appreciation
to our cousin/David’s nephew, Tommy Mamay, who was there supporting us
all when it was very much needed. Arrangements have been entrusted to
the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services,
Kentville.
David’s legacy will live on in
the countless lives he touched,
both
in and out of the classroom.
