David Hayward Stokes Obituary
David Hayward Stokes
January 3, 1937 – February 26, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David Hayward Stokes on February 26, 2025, at the age of 88. David was the youngest of ten siblings and stayed close and connected to all of them throughout their lives.
A gentle soul with boundless curiosity and enthusiasm, David had a passion for travel, learning, and adventure. He embraced new experiences with an open heart and an inquisitive mind. A self-taught chef, he delighted in hosting dinner parties, experimenting with new recipes, and collecting an impressive array of kitchen gadgets. His love of cooking was only rivalled by his love of the sea. He first learned to sail from the comfort of his armchair but soon took to the water—first at Ocean Pond, then in the ocean—where he enjoyed many unforgettable adventures. David also spent countless hours in his workshop, building furniture and intricate model boats. He immersed himself in books and studied the bible countless times over.
David was a man of unwavering faith, and his love for the Lord shone through every aspect of his life. He found great joy in prayer, strength in scripture, and peace in the promise of eternal life.
David leaves behind his beloved daughters: Susan Stokes (Rick Browning – Deceased), Wendy Taylor (Michael), and Nicole Broeckling (Garry), as well as his devoted companion, Marilyn, and his grandchildren: Catherine and David, Anna (Nick and their daughter Lily), Jonathan (Emiola), Emily, and Chantel. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends, but his memory will live on in the many lives he touched.
Visitation will be held at Barrett’s Funeral Home 73 Commonwealth Ave., Mount Pearl on Saturday, March 1, 2025 from 7:00 -9:00 pm and Sunday, March 2, 2025 from 2:00 -4:00 pm and 7:00 -9:00 pm.
A service to celebrate David’s life will be held on Monday, March 3, 2025 at 11:00 am from First Baptist Church. 1 Ambassador Place, Mount Pearl. Interment to follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David’s memory to the First Baptist Church.
He is Home with the Lord.
