Daphne Austin Obituary
Daphne Joan Austin nee Sargeant
January 16, 1937 – June 1st, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our dear Daphne, who died peacefully on Sunday, June 1st, 2025 at Allendale Long Term Care. Daphne’s life was a testament to her quiet kindness and gentle soul. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Daphne was born and raised in London England where she spent her early years riding her bicycle with her friend Mags through the countryside to school and seeking shelter during War time air raids. One of her favourite holidays in England was Easter Monday when the festivities were done and her extended family would leisurely walk the forest floor near Worthing amongst the bluebells.
Daphne attended Bedford College. It was there she met her beloved husband, the late Christopher Austin. Together, they embarked on a new life in Canada, where they raised their five children. Chris went to work with the Avro Arrow and Daphne taught at St. Mildreds in Oakville. They were involved with St. Peters Anglican Church where Daphne was a longstanding member of the Handbell Choir. They had many business ventures including selling El Toro sailboats at the Toronto Boat show and Micro Light aircrafts.
Daphne’s greatest joy was her family. Predeceased by her husband Christopher in 1984, she leaves behind her five children, Dawn Eglitis, Peter Austin (Madeline), Lynn Austin (Paul), John Austin (Kariann) and Julie Wilkinson (Paul). She was a devoted Grandma to seven grandchildren, Mark Eglitis (Alyssa), Christopher Austin (Chris), Sara Eglitis Seitz (Scott), Christine Wilkinson Huitema (Jason), Joel Austin (Jordyn), Austin Wilkinson, and Jenna Wilkinson (Rob), step grandchildren Justin and Kate, and was delighted to have two great grandchildren Evie Austin, and Lily Seitz. Daphne was a loving sister to Brian Sargeant (Diana), Trevor Sargeant (Barbara) and Vera Simey; a special aunty to their children Guy, Claire, Linda, Joel, Duncan, Adam, and Anita. Predeceased by her sister-in-laws Marion Beswick, Pauline Procter and fondly remembered by their children Mark, Sean, Gary and Nicola.
Daphne was a woman of many talents and quiet strength. With a creative spirit and tireless hands she started Austin Custom upholstery; she sewed her own clothes – including her wedding dress and crafted everything from cushions, to antique car upholstery, furniture, aircraft interiors, boat covers and sails. Her passion for photography lead her to capture precious moments at weddings, family gatherings, and holiday events including cherished pictures with Santa at the Milton Mall. She found joy in gardening, creating floral arrangements, knitting and reading, and shared creativity with others through a small gift and craft store she ran from her home. Daphne had a warm smile, a generous heart and a gentle presence that brought comfort and love to all who knew her.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff, Personal Support Workers and Nurses, at Allendale LTC, for the care and kindness they showed Daphne in her final years. We would like to thank all of the life enrichment team and especially Laura, Sam and Kailey who loved doing crafts and games. Yvonne treated Daphne like a mother with her protective love and caring. A special thank you to her friend Judy, who visited her weekly.
A Memorial Visitation will take place at the McKersie & Early Funeral Home, located at 114 Main St. E., Milton, on Thursday June 5, 2025 from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm
In lieu of flowers, we ask for an act of kindness by paying it forward or for you to make a donation to the charity of your choice in Daphne’s memory.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. Though she is no longer with us, Daphne’s memory will live on in every garden she inspired, every photo she captured and every heart she touched.
A private family interment will take place in the future at the Milton Evergreen Cemetery.
