Daniel “Dan” Frederick Johnston, age 80, passed away peacefully, while vacationing in Costa Rica, on January 31, 2025.
Born and raised on the Miramichi River in New Brunswick, Canada, Dan lived a life filled with adventure, dedication, and a love for the world around him. He was the son of the late Elizabeth “Eliza” (Matthews) Johnston and Addington “Add” Johnston.
After graduating from Mount Allison University with a Bachelor of Science degree and St Francis Xavier University with a Master of Education, Dan returned to his alma mater, North and South Esk Regional High School in Sunny Corner, NB, to begin a career in teaching science. His passion for teaching and inspiring young minds led him to travel extensively, and, after retirement, adopting a second home in New Zealand, where he continued to share his knowledge.
After retiring, Dan’s love for learning and sharing knowledge did not wane. He embarked on a new journey, teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) in various countries, including China, Russia, and New Zealand, among others. His love for art, music, and the outdoors was evident in everything he did. Dan’s zest for life and his boundless curiosity left an impression on all who knew him.
Dan was deeply cherished by his many friends around the world. His warmth, kindness, and adventurous spirit made him a beloved figure in countless communities. He formed lasting friendships that spanned continents and cultures, creating a network of love and support that will remember him fondly.
Dan is survived by his two aunts, Audrey (Matthews) Somers and Nellie (Matthews) St. Pierre; several first cousins; and many first cousins once removed. His memory will be cherished by family, friends, and former students across the globe.
Dan was an active member of River Church, in Sillikers, NB.
A memorial celebration in honor of Dan’s life will be determined at a later date.
