Obituary – In Memory of David Allan Brooks
Following a life well lived, we announce the passing of David Allan Brooks, otherwise known as Al or Allan on February 26, 2025.
Allan was the son of Morley and Irma Brooks (Cooper) and predeceased by his wife Betty Barbara Brooks (Emorey); his partner Joan Davidson; sisters Ruth Lewis (Paul), Lois Rowe (Foster) and Marion Gallinger (Paul); brother Glen Brooks (Beverly).
He enjoyed building things, the hunting camp (which he was instrumental in creating and maintaining), snowmobiling, and a good party. His years in and around the construction business, and being aligned with Brooks Construction as well as Oshawa Equipment Rentals, served him well.
He was involved in many projects in Oshawa and surrounding areas such as: additions to the Oshawa Hospital, now Lakeridge Health, in 1960; major renovations to the Oshawa Times building; a 9 bay garage and shop in Huntsville and the creation of a press pit in Oshawa for Houdaille Industries.
Al also helped many a family member with their home projects, building new garages, decks and workshops, or offering his advice and experience when needed.
He had a creative mind and a strong work ethic. If anyone could make something work or create a new use for something, it was him. While he did not suffer fools easily, he was a good friend to many, a good listener and always ready to lend a helping hand.
Allan is survived by his 5 children: Terry Prentice (Rick) of Port Perry; Doug Brooks (Laura) of Courtice; Don Brooks (Debbie) of Apsley; Lynn Georgeff (Jim) of Newmarket; Janice Turner of Wasaga Beach; and step-son Rob Davidson (Cathy) of Port Perry; 15 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 4 great, great grandchildren.
At a recent doctor’s appointment the doctor indicated he rarely saw someone who was 96 years of age and asked him about his life. Al responded by saying: “I am tired, but I am 96, have 5 kids and not one of them is a dud.” He was a devoted family man and will be sorely missed by all.
In his 96 years he rarely complained about anything, loved to be busy and creatively productive, usually had a joke for everybody, and loved a tasty dessert. The only things he really did not like were chicken, telephone solicitors, and lazy people!
We hope you will join us on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at the Barnes Memorial Funeral Home, 5295 Thickson Rd. North, Whitby, Ontario for a time of reminiscing and storytelling with the family from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.
In memory of Allan, donations to the CNIB Guide Dog Program would be appreciated.
