Cornelia Broer Obituary
Cornelia (Corrie) Broer (Mik) Our Mom, our guidance, referee, and counsellor. Our support, mentor, disciplinarian and of course our shoulder to cry on, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2025 at the tender age of 93 years old. Mom was born to Jan and Maria Mik in Dordrecht, Netherlands on December 21, 1931. Mom had a big family with four sisters and four brothers. This included Ria (George), Rebekka (Cor), Johanna (Gerry), Jan (Valerie), Hubrecht (Trudy), Bertha (Leo), Piet (Betty), Andy (Joanne). Mom met her love Gerry in Moerkapelle and they married in 1953. Less than 3 weeks after their wedding, they immigrated to Canada with the entire Mik family. From Halifax, they took the trans-continental train to Edmonton, Alberta, where Dad had a job waiting for him. In 1955, the Broer family moved to Calgary. Dad took over a job as foreman at Canada Iron and mom worked at The Bay for some time, then was as a part time house cleaner.
Mom and Dad had a total of 6 children. Johanna (Robert), Jan (Gepke), Maria (Gordon), Maurice (Teresa), Garret (Tamara) and of course Andrew (Sue). Mom was proud of her children, her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved having them visit and she hoped they would stay for as long as she could kidnap them. Her passion was her children. Until such time her grandchildren came along, then it was all about spoiling them. She had so much love to share, she took on numerous foster children. Many with disabilities and she was despondent every time they were adopted away. She loved them as her own that much. Her other loves were her many crafts including Needlepoint, sewing, knitting, crochet and of course gardening. Mom loved tulips. Even after planting 200 tulips in the garden, she would insist that there was not enough, and she would plant 300 more to be sure she had enough. It was beautiful when they came up. Mom also had a real soft spot for animals. She loved her cats and dogs. Even on cold winter nights would wait for Dad to go to bed, and she would sneak the barn cats in the house for some food and milk. Then send them on their way again. There were so many animals over the years that had been blessed by her love. Mom is predeceased by our Dad, son Garret, her parents, Dad’s parents, grandchildren Kyle and Laura, Brothers John and Piet, Sisters Bertha and Joanne. Brother in laws Leo, Gerrit and just getting his wings, Uncle George. Internment is at 11:00am, on Monday March 10, 2025. Meet at the Snodgrass Funeral Home 200 Westgate Road Okotoks at 10:30 am to follow Mom’s coach to the plot. Of course this is if you wish to join us there.
A celebration of life will be held at Okotoks Free Evangelical Church (28 Westland Road, Okotoks, at 1:00pm on Monday March 10, 2025.
