Obituary of Clara Mae Purcell
In the early morning hours of Sunday, August 3, 2025, Clara Mae (Rodgers) Purcell gently passed at home with her family surrounding her.
Clara, Mom, Nan P., M.I.L or Nanny Purple, as she was known by those who loved her, was a lovely, gentle, faithful soul, who, as was often said of her, didn’t have a mean bone or thought in her body and spirit. She loved, and always saw the best in everyone she met.
Clara loved and was loved by her family deeply. Her passing will leave a big empty space in the hearts of many who had the privilege of knowing her.
Clara was the daughter of Seymour and Ruth (Dockrill) Rodgers. Left to cherish her memory are her son, Vernon (Heather), her daughter, Alayne (Paul), grandchildren, Ashley (Stuart), Kyle (Erin), Jordan, Katie (Jarrett), and Alan, great-grandchildren, Gabriella, Oakley, Eleanor and Jack, brother, Fred (Denise), sister-in-law, Dorothy, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless others who adopted her as their special grandmother, aunt or best friend.
Clara was predeceased by her husband, David Vernon Purcell, her parents, Seymour and Ruth, mother and father-in-law, Arthur and Christine Purcell, brother, Seymour Jr., sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Karl Robinson, and sister and brother-in-law, Corrine and Guy Joudry.
Clara loved God and her church, where she was the church secretary, as well as a member of the Anglican Church Women, Mother’s Union, and Emmanuel Ladies Fellowship groups, acting in many various capacities.
Clara’s service will take place at 11 am on Saturday, August 23, 2025 at Emmanuel Anglican Church, Herring Cove Road, Halifax, with a reception to follow in the church hall. Interment will be for family only, as well as family flowers only, as per Clara’s request.
Clara’s favourite colour was purple- any shade. If you would like, please wear something to honour “Nanny Purple”, and share in that memory.
Donations can be made to the Emmanuel Church Cemetery Fund, The Canadian Diabetes Association, Soul’s Harbour Rescue Mission or to the charity of your choice.
The family would like to sincerely thank the healthcare professionals who supported Clara during her last days, especially Dr. Bronwen Jones, Dr. Jill Carter, the EHS, and the ER teams on duty that morning. Special thanks also to caregivers, Liz Hicks and Sharan from Home Instead, and Arlene Croft, Erin Jennings, Emma, Mitchell and Pam at Walkers Funeral Home. Thankyou to Lynette Marshall, Continuing Care, Tammy Lovette, Home Instead, and the team of angels at Northwood Day Program, Ivany Campus. Heartfelt thanks to Emmanuel’s loyal members, Barb and Sandra.
The gentle care, empathy and sincere love made this difficult situation a true blessing to Clara and her family.
