With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Christopher “Chris” Scarff, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Chris passed away suddenly on March 8, 2025, at the age of 73 in Nelson, BC. He lived a life filled with love, laughter and happiness.
Chris found the most joy in the simple moments of life – taking his dog, Ryker, for long walks, spending time at his beloved cottage and watching a favourite TV show with his loved ones. He enjoyed the outdoors, whether through hiking up Pulpit or rowing and kayaking on Kootenay Lake.
Born on December 21, 1951, in Toronto, ON, Chris was the fourth child born to Ernest and Marjory. He met the love of his life, Gail, in 1971, and together they built a family full of love for one another. Their children Shawn, Sarah, Jason and Taryn were the center of Chris’s world. Chris was a devoted father – the kind of dad who never missed a practice, volunteered to coach sports teams and made sure his kids always knew they were supported and loved.
Chris dedicated 30 years of his career to the provincial government. Though he took pride in his work, his favourite part of the day was always coffee with his friends, sharing stories, laughter and chatting about the weekend’s football games – often being razzed about his Seattle Seahawks.
Chris cared deeply for those he loved, always offering support, wisdom and kindness in his own understated way. A man of simple pleasures, Chris enjoyed spending time with his family above all else.
Chris is survived by his wife, Gail, his children Shawn (Raciel), Sarah (Colin), Jason and Taryn (Logan) and his grandchildren Melayna, Shay, Calla and Ethan. He will also be deeply missed by his brother Rick, his sister Nancy, his sister-in-law Pat, his brother-in-law David and his nieces and nephews. Chris was predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Marjory, and his brother Steve.
Chris’s legacy is one of love, humour and a quiet devotion to the people and places that mattered most to him. His family and friends will forever hold him in their hearts.
Special thanks and gratitude to the KERPA team, as well as the nurses and doctors at Kootenay Lake Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Chris’s memory to the Kootenay Emergency Response Physicians Association (KERPA). A celebration of life will be held later this summer.
