Obituary
Charles was an amazing person!
He grew up on the Gould Road, the son of Pearle Gould and Delmar Gould with a brilliant mind and a love of knowledge and people. He was foolish and fun and talented at whatever he tried. From juggling, to drawing, to twirling a lasso – he taught himself many things as a child.
After graduating from Amherst Regional High School, he was awarded a scholarship and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science from St. Francis Xavier University. He would later attend Mount Allison University and graduated with a Bachelor of Education. He taught in many classrooms and loved to tell stories about his students who always called him Charley.
He is survived by one sister, Carolyn “Babe” Gould, along with cousins, nieces, nephews and close friend Sharon Boyd. He was predeceased by his partner, Rose Junkert.
“Uncle Charles” spent hours teasing his nieces and nephews, teaching them the longest word in the world (it’s pronounced defosfofosforalaysfosfokynays – we all remember how to say it but not what it is), and helping with school projects.
Music was a constant throughout his life. He carved drum sticks as a boy on the Gould Road and taught himself to play. He was a drummer in a band for many years and it was at a gig at the local Legion where he met his beloved Rose. He was a proud member of the Pipes and Drums military band and performed with them at the Halifax International Tattoo.
Charles was the keeper of our family history. He remembered names and connections and which trees marked which property lines.
Astronomy was another of his passions and, like everything he was curious about, he learned all there was to know.
He loved to meet people and as a young man travelled to the United Kingdom.
As an older man he and Rose travelled to many places and returned with stories of the people and animals they met. At the core of his interest in the universe, the world and his own corner of Cumberland County was his love of people. Charles was a longtime member of the ham radio club which allowed him to talk and listen to others around the globe – for decades his vehicle sported a vanity plate with his call sign: VE1BK.
Charles was a scientist at heart and regretted not having a career in medicine.
He was brilliant and humble and will be missed by everyone who knew him. There isn’t enough room to describe such a wonderful person.
