Obituary of Charles Schofield
CHARLES (CHARLIE) EDWARD SCHOFIELD
After a brief illness, it is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Charles (Charlie) Edward Schofield, on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at the age of eighty-four years.
Charlie, born on June 23, 1940, was the second youngest of eleven children of the late Clarence and Norma (West) Schofield, of Dempsey Corner, Nova Scotia. He is predeceased by his brothers Joe, Dave, Phil, Hugh, George, and Robert and sisters Margaret (Peggy) and Mary.
Charlie is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Joyce (nee Nicholson), his loving children, Kathleen (Ted), Damian (Laura), and Christopher, as well as his adoring grandchildren, Jessica, Ian, Olivia and Luna. He is also survived by his sister Norma, Halifax, NS; brother John, Bellville, ON and many nieces and nephews across Canada.
Following secondary school at West Kings, Charlie enrolled in the machinist apprenticeship program at Her Majesty’s Canadian Dockyard in Halifax, where he graduated with honours. He moved to Ontario where he was employed for 40 years at Imperial Tobacco Ltd. in Guelph as a skilled tradesman, who was highly respected by his fellow co-workers.
Charlie had numerous interests and engaged in his community. He was involved in Scouting, and was highly regarded by the young boys as “Scouter Charlie” with the 9th Guelph Scout Troop. He was also a proud member of the Knights of Columbus and served in various parish ministries. Upon retirement, Charlie and Joyce enjoyed travelling abroad visiting family and friends in Australia, New Zealand, and UK and throughout Canada.
Charlie had a tremendous passion for spending time outdoors tending to his flower and vegetable gardens. He found his peace in nature and captured the beauty of the world’s natural wonders, particularly his beloved monarch butterflies, through his love of photography. Charlie’s greatest joy was watching his family, especially his grandchildren, pursue their various interests and capturing them on film.
The family extends heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Dr. Kim, Dr. Refaei as well as Dr. Scher and his exceptional palliative care team, for their compassionate care.
Visitation will be held at Benner Funeral Services, 1105 Benner Ave., Fort Erie on Sunday, March 30 from 4 – 6 p.m. Funeral Mass will take place at St. Michael Roman Catholic Church, 310 Central Ave., Fort Erie on Monday, March 31 at 11:00 a.m.
Donations in Charlie’s memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or the Canadian Cancer Society.
