Charles James Innes Obituary
In Loving Memory of Charles James Innes
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Charles James Innes of Lower Newcastle, New Brunswick, husband of Marjorie Innes (Daley), and father of Raymond Innes (Melanie Dickson) and Janice Innes (Blake Lynch). Charles passed away at the Miramichi Regional Hospital on January 17th, 2025, at the age of 73, surrounded by his family.
He was born on December 18th, 1951 in Chatham, New Brunswick, to the late Ruth (Russell) and O’Leary Innes. He was the sixth of eight children.
Charles had a spirit and a voice that were larger and louder than life. He was kind-hearted and had a wonderful sense of humour. He was a loyal man who was steadfast in his commitment to his family, friends, and community. He was a farmer, a ferrier, and a teamster. He made hay, drove tractor, and exercised horses. He had tremendous strength, both of body and character. He loved good food, good stories, and good company.
Charles and Marjorie were married in 1978. They built their home together, raised a family together, and pulled and showed horses together. Whatever they did, they always did it together.
As a father, Charles was devoted, protective, and a true mentor. He delighted in spending time with his children and imparting his wisdom, often through humour. Family time was spent in the barn, on the fairgrounds, and around the kitchen table; cherished memories of a loving father.
He was a grandfather of four: Liam Innes, Nora Innes, Evelyn Lynch, and Elsie Lynch. He was an affectionate grandparent and loved each child deeply, as they were his pride and joy, and his greatest feat.
He was a heavy equipment operator for the Department of Transportation as snowplow operator, boom truck operator, chip seal crew worker, and bridge crew worker. He was a creative problem solver with a strong work ethic.
He had working, skillful hands. Reins, horseshoes, harness, rasps, and baler string all passed through his hands on a regular basis. His hands cut wood and worked the land. These hands could often be found holding a phone, as he talked to his numerous friends throughout Canada and the United States. His hands provided for his family, helped his neighbours, and held his grandchildren – strong, powerful hands.
He loved the outdoors and being in the woods driving horses; wagon or sleigh, day or night, you could often find him there. He loved the heat of a wood furnace, a hot cup of tea, the smell of leather, the colour blue, and the sound of sleigh bells. He loved pulling horses with his father-in-law, Stewart Daley. His holidays were spent at the Fryeburg Fair, the Napan Fair, the Bridgewater Exhibition, and the Cumberland Fair.
All of his dreams were realized. From pulling three times in the International Horse Pull to building a new barn – he always accomplished what he set out to do.
He wore big boots and big belt buckles. He drove big trucks and big trailers. He operated big equipment and owned big horses. Everything Charles did was big. Above all, he loved big, a legacy that he has left behind for us all; a love too big to die.
Visitation will be held at Adams Funeral Home Ltd., 140 King St., Miramichi, NB, on Friday evening, January 24th, 2025, from 7-9 PM, and also on Saturday, January 25th, 2025, from 2-4 PM, and 7-9 PM. Additionally, a Celebration of Charles’ Life will occur at a later time and date to be announced.
