Charles Albert “Al” Gattrell
May 6, 1932 – March 21, 2025
Passed away peacefully, with family by his side, at Mathews House Hospice in Alliston at the age of 92.
Beloved husband of Ann for 65 years, loving father of Robert (Sarah), Michael (Karen), David (Jayne), Thomas (Yvonne) and Susan, grandfather of Christopher, Peter, James, Andrew, Nicholas, Zachary, Maggie and Beth, and great-grandfather of Thomas. Al was the last surviving member of a family of 8 children, growing up on a farm in Manitoba.
Al had a long and distinguished military career. He enlisted at age 17 and was deployed to the Korean Conflict as a member of the Royal Canadian Electrical Mechanical Engineers. He also served with UN peacekeeping forces in Egypt after the Suez crisis. He met Ann when he was stationed in Kingston. He finished his career teaching in the technical school at CFB Borden and settled the family in Alliston. Ann and Al remained in their home in Alliston until March of this year.
Al was fiercely independent and, until Christmas 2024, did the shopping and cooking. He cooked the turkey for the family Christmas dinner in 2024. Al enjoyed golfing, curling and walks in the woods with dogs and grand-children. He loved family dinners and relished the opportunity to tell jokes and puns.
