September 20, 1937 – March 29, 2025
It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Catherine Jacques (nee Esplen) at the Southampton Care Centre at the age of 87.
Catherine is predeceased by her parents, Henry and Hazel Esplen (nee McKeen) and her husband of 29 years Merton (1990) and her siblings, Mac Esplen, Mardi Lyness and Jack Esplen. She leaves behind her daughter Suzanne Jacques, and her husband Jim Wade, daughter Dianne “Mini” Jacques, and sons Tom and Bill Jacques and her grandchildren David, Nikki and Thomas. She also will be fondly remembered by her sister-in-law Colleen McBratney Esplen of Kelowna BC, Mary Lou and Ray Fenton and family, and many cousins, nieces and nephews spread throughout Bruce County and beyond. Catherine will especially be missed by long time friends Barb Ross, and Janet Eagleson.
Catherine was born and raised in Arran Township, and moved to Port Elgin, Ontario at age 15 to begin a 47 year retail career. Throughout her career she was a familiar face at many stores located on the main street of Port Elgin and spent her last years working at Port Elgin Home Hardware.
Her pride and joy were her family, her home and being out in her community. She was a lifelong sports fan following her favourite teams. Catherine was a devoted fan and season ticket holder for the local senior men’s AA hockey team the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks, a life long fan of the Maple Leafs, and the Blue Jays and any game of curling she would find to watch on TV. Catherine was thrilled when she got the opportunity to see her favourite curlers in person when the Ontario men’s (Tankard) and women’s (Scotties) curling championships were held at the Plex in 2023. A dream come true for her! She also was a long time volunteer at Elgin Lodge and was a proud “Red Hatter” and a long time member of PARC 55+ (Port Adult Recreation Centre).
A special thank you all those that helped Mom to stay in her home for as long as she could these past six years: Colleen Fowler NP, Home and Community Services and Care Partners for support with wonderful PSW’s, housekeeping staff and encouraging and caring staff at the local Day-Away program. Her medical team at both the Southampton Hospital and the Southampton Care Centre were outstanding in their care and compassion for these past four months and always ensured Mom was comfortable and pain free.
As per Catherine’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral or visitation. Interment will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to “Saugeen Shores Aquatic & Wellness Centre Commemorative Brick Campaign” in Catherine’s name (justaddwaternow.ca/commemorative-bricks/) or a charity of your choice.
We thank all who have reached out to us as a family and individually.
