Born at the family farm north of Mather, Manitoba, Ilene was the second daughter and fourth child of Calvin and Isma (nee Finnen) Foster. Ilene attended Rock Lake School where her mother had been a teacher. This meant she grew up in the age of one-room schools where warmth was provided by a wood stove, light from kerosene lanterns and a sleigh ride got you there in winter. From those beginnings, Ilene was a life-long learner and knew the value of a good education. She took a keen interest in local and world affairs and in the comings and goings of her family. Local papers were read and analyzed avidly. As times changed, she used her computer to keep up-to-date and in touch with her family. It was a Saturday morning habit to have a lengthy video chat with her daughter. She kept a keen eye out for texts or emails from her grandchildren and watched those all-important cattle sales and riding events online. Ilene married Jim Marchant on November 21,1956 and moved to their farm just south of Holmfield. In the early years, she looked after her young family and milked a herd of cows. When asked about this, she was quick to assert that milking cows was a fate worse than poison! Those cows were gone in a few years and the farm settled into a routine of seeding, haying, harvesting and feeding animals in the winter. Her dad Calvin was well-known sheepman, and a flock made their way on to the farm. Ilene still holds two shares in the Canadian Wool Growers Association. Amongst all the farm activities, she made sure her children went to school, played on hockey and ball teams and were involved in 4-H. Curling was a passion and bonspiels were important social and competitive activities for her and Jim. Even though she and Jim retired to Cartwright thirty years ago, Ilene kept a keen eye on the happenings at the farm. She proudly attended 4-H and sporting events of her grandchildren and most recently her great-grandchildren. She also loved travelling with her daughter on genealogical expeditions to far flung places like England, Ireland, Virginia, Missouri and Ontario. Over the last year, she visited her granddaughters in Calgary, Alberta and Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan. Ilene was a steadfast supporter of the local community and school, and could be counted on to buy a ticket, make a donation, cook some food or contribute her opinion. She and Jim attended a community supper and show this past fall where they had a grand time; Jim is sure they were the oldest people in the room. We are deeply saddened by the loss of our wife, mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother, sister and aunt. She leaves behind her husband of 68 years Jim; daughter, Tracy in Saskatoon; son, Blake and his wife Valerie on the farm, and their children Clint (Andrea), Robert (Kelsey) and Mandy (Trevor Schott); son, Blair and his wife Sandi, and their daughter Sydney (Matt) of Hudson Bay; granddaughters, Katie (Matt Pickering) and Sarah (Steve Jenkins) of Calgary; sister, Phyllis of Winnipeg; many nieces and nephews. The great-grandchildren whom Ilene held so dear are Hadley and Lane Marchant; Reid Pickering; Katherine Lashomb and Lillian and Stephan Marchant; Isla, Aurora and Anson Schott. Ilene was predeceased by her daughter Cindy; son-inlaw Doug Gage; three brothers, Doug, Bill and Don; sister, Audrey. An informal come and go tea for those who wish to join us in remembering Ilene will be held Monday, February 17, 2025 at the Cartwright Community Hall. A private inurnment will be held at a later date in the Cartwright Cemetery. Donations in leu of flowers can be made in Ilene’s memory to the Cartwright Independent School, Box 439, Cartwright, MB R0K 0L0, the Cartwright Cemetery or Mather Cemetery (cheques made payable to Cartwright –Roblin Municipality, Box 9, Cartwright, MB R0K 0L0).
