On January 24, 2025, God welcomed home Carol “Marie” McKelvie (Craig). She was born on February 27,
1945, in Saint John, New Brunswick, where she lived most of her life until she moved to Nova Scotia in
2021.
She was the daughter of the late Ralph Daniel Craig and the late Bertha Louise Craig (Hanson) and was
predeceased by her son, Mark Donald McKelvie. She was married to the late Donald Gordon McKelvie, her
soul mate and the love of her life, her rock, her Donnie. The man she would love Until the Twelfth of
Never.
Marie grew up on Moore Street and Rockland Road and couldn’t have been prouder of that fact. She
always had such affectionate stories about her childhood there and how everyone took care of each other.
In fact, Marie had stories about everything and was a brilliant storyteller. You could swear that you were
there when she would tell you a story about running the roads with her lifelong, cherished friends, Donna,
Lorna, and Darlene. And she told those stories to the end.
Marie was a hard worker, starting at just 16 at Crosby’s Molasses factory. When Dad was transferred to
Toronto, she worked in a factory making phones. She’s driven a catering truck at the shipyard, worked at
Zellers, and been a bookkeeper at NBTel. The job she was most proud of was Supervisor at National
Sampling Demonstrations. She loved the travel and her girls.
Marie also loved her summers at Wally’s in the Cambridge Narrows. It was her haven, with her Donnie, her
peaceful place, filled with friends, family, and her dog Bud.
Marie cherished her family: her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, in-laws, and
outlaws. If she loved you, you were family. She was a second mom to so many and had a great impact on
their lives. She had an extra soft spot for her Goddaughter, Lynn Carvery and her husband, Spencer and
their girls, Zoe and Lane. Thank you for loving and caring for her so beautifully!
She was tough as nails with a tender heart. She was full of empathy and always had time to listen—she was a
GREAT listener. It was hard to keep anything inside when Marie sensed there was something wrong. She
used this gift to bring comfort to many- including all of those she sponsored in AA. Mom was intensely
proud of her sobriety and would help anyone in need.
Most recently, Mom loved spending time with her grandchildren, who she loved with all of her heart and
soul and great-grandchildren, who sang and danced for her, gave her adoring hugs, and kept her laughing.
Her family would like to thank the staff at Maplestone Enhanced Care, who loved on her, cared for her and
filled her time there with meaning.
Marie will be missed by her much-loved nieces, nephews, and sisters-in-law Mamie (Ernie) Freeze and
Betty (Gordon) Smith.
Marie will be deeply missed by her daughter Dawn McKelvie Cyr (Marc), son William McKelvie, grandsons
Liam Cyr (Katie), Aidan Cyr (Hannah), and Rylie McKelvie, granddaughter Hannah McKelvie, and their mother Francine Bourque,as well as great-grandchildren Frederic, Gordon, Lucia, Audrey, Amelia, Odin,
and Charlotte.
Go rest high on that mountain, Mama. And give a squeeze to Mark and Dad.
