Caroline Campbell Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Caroline Campbell, 93, on Sunday, February 16, 2025, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born at Scotch Lake, she was the daughter of the late Vincent and Caroline (Roach) Walsh.
Caroline graduated from Holy Angels High School in Sydney as well as the Nova Scotia Teachers College in Truro. She taught school for several years in North Sydney and Little Pond before moving to Ontario where she would work as a substitute teacher along with raising her family. She retired back to Cape Breton in 1981, living in Bras d’Or and later North Sydney.
Following the death of her husband Roy in 1994, Caroline spent many summers with her sister Kay at the cottage in Georges River, swimming with Floyd and Sissy, playing cards and travelling with the gals of her card club. After summers were over, her busy lifestyle continued with the North Sydney Senior Citizens and Pensioners Club of which she was a former secretary, treasurer and vice-president. Many hours were spent selling tickets and making food to help raise money for the many trips she and Minnie Piercey organized. Mom was a vocal proponent of activities for seniors in the community and encouraged many to join the seniors club as a means to maintain active lifestyles and socialize to combat loneliness. She was the poster person for how to stay active and enjoy life to the fullest in her later years. She loved to dance and she and her “dance partner” Doug, would often be the first and last ones on the dance floor. She was an active volunteer with the Northside Community Guest Home Recreation Group for 14 years, making sure residents were able to take advantage of the many activities available to them. Her involvement there and friendship with staff and residents alike, allowed her to make an easy transition from volunteer to resident and the staff welcomed her with open arms.
Although many would know her through her volunteer efforts, we knew her as the loving, caring mom who was so proud of her children, grandchildren and their accomplishments, big or small. She was unwavering in her support, was always there with words of wisdom and she gave the best hugs.
Caroline is survived by her five children, Kevin (Tracey) and Rose Campbell, both of Brantford ON; Jim (Kim), North Sydney, Carrie (Keith) Johns, Beaverbank, NS, Dan (Shirley) of Sydney Mines. Also, by her eight grandchildren, Cheryl (Evan), Brent, Brandon (Caitlinn), Michelle (Shane), Chris (Scarlet), Jarrett (Katie), Amanda (Kyle), Mark (Christena); step grandchildren, Daniel (Rose) McRae, Lisa McRae (Kyle). Great grandchildren, Austin, Olivia, Lillian, Autumn, Gavin, Mia, and another on the way; step great grandchildren, Henry and Amelia and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving is companion Doug Carter and his family who have been so kind to Caroline over the years.
Caroline was predeceased by her husband LeRoy (Roy) Campbell, her siblings, Rose (Joe) Baldwin, Catherine “Kay” (Johnny) Logue, Matthew (Marg) Walsh, Vince (Helen) Walsh, Joseph (Virginia) Walsh, Jim (Jean) Walsh, Rob (Joanne) Walsh, as well as several brothers and sisters-in law of the Campbell family. Caroline was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Visitation will be 4-7 pm, Thursday, February 20, 2025, at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11:00 am, Friday at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Doug MacDonald officiating. The Mass will be live-streamed on the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home Facebook page. Burial will take place at a later date in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Northside Hospital Foundation, Northside Community Guest Home or a charity of choice. Online condolences can be left for the family on the tribute wall of the obituary.
