Carol Anne Cleary
August 17, 1940 – February 2, 2025
It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of Carol Anne Cleary of Dartmouth on February 2, 2025. Carol passed away peacefully at the Dartmouth General Hospital, with her granddaughter by her side, after a long, hard-fought battle against cancer.
Carol was born in Halifax to the late Raymond and Edith (Henneberry) Purdy on August 17, 1940 and was raised as an only child after the passing of her infant brother, Allan James. She grew up in the (then) small fishing village of Eastern Passage and received her education from St. Andrew’s School. Carol attended St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, where she was baptized and confirmed. In 1964, she married her schoolmate and next door neighbour, Bill, and they moved to Dartmouth, welcoming their daughter, Anne Marie, in 1965.
Carol worked as a civilian with DND, and through promotion, was employed at HMC Dockyard and CFB Shearwater. Her efforts were appreciated by her supervisors and subordinates alike and she received an Outstanding Service Award from the Commander of Maritime Air.
Carol adored animals and always had at least one little fur person in her home, including her incredibly spoiled Mojoe, who was by her side for the last 17 years. She had a profound passion for music, enjoying every genre from opera to country, and she loved playing the piano. Carol treasured her card nights with friends and enjoyed playing bingo. She was known for her beautiful long hair, love of fashion, infectious laugh, and determined (not stubborn) demeanor.
Carol is predeceased by her husband of 50 years, William (“Bill”) George Cleary (2014) and her beloved daughter, Anne Marie Cleary (2021).
Carol leaves to mourn her only grandchild, Sydney Marie Hiltz, who she loved dearly and who brought peace and happiness to the end of her life. We give our deepest gratitude to her good friends Larry and Annette Corkum and their son Adam for their continued support and attentiveness, as well as to her long-time friend, Maryanne Porter, who was always there to share stories and give her a good laugh.
A heartfelt thank you to the doctors, nurses and palliative care team for the compassionate care they provided throughout Carol’s cancer journey at home and during her stay at the Dartmouth General Hospital.
In keeping with Carol’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, February 28th, at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, 1570 Shore Road, Eastern Passage, with interment to follow at the churchyard cemetery. A reception will be held at the Lions Club, 65 Hornes Road, Eastern Passage.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to Hope for Wildlife in memory of her love for animals.
