Fursman, Carmen, Madelene, Annette (Sabourin)
May 26, 1929 – January 15, 2025
With sadness and gratitude for a long life we say goodbye to Carmen, Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother (GG), in her 96th year.
Predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Harold Edgar (2010) and her son Harold “Charles” Fursman (2019).
She was the loving mother of Carol Schenk (Dale) of Guelph and Robert Fursman (Linda) of Waterloo. She will be remembered with great fondness by her grandchildren Melissa Hay (Justin), Paige Fursman (Tim), Laura Armstrong (Daniel), Caitlin Mombourquette (Dan), Brad Fursman and Kelsey Fursman, and by her niece Pam Layne (Gerry). Carmen was so very proud to be a Great Grandmother, affectionately known as GG to Walker and Lincoln Hay and Aubrey and Bennett Armstrong.
Carmen was born in Cobalt, Northern Ontario, the youngest child of Amanda and Arthur Sabourin. Predeceased by her brothers and sisters, Omer, Laurette, Leo, Georgette, Roland and Theresa.
Mom moved to Hanover when she married Dad which was quite a culture change for her. Carmen was proud to be fluent in both our official languages. Mom loved to curl, lawn bowl, play cards, create beautiful needlecrafts, host dinners and spend time at the cottage in Sauble Beach. She was a lifetime member of the Hanover Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. Carmen could be spotted running her lawn mower or her snowblower with determination until she was almost 80! Mom was a master at fixing things in her own ingenious ways. She filled our family home with friends and family, entertaining and treating everyone to her wonderful cooking and baking. Her tarts and pies will be missed!
In 2016 Carmen relocated to Royal on Gordon Retirement residence in Guelph, to be closer to her family. She enjoyed many aspects of retirement living, while adamantly guarding her independence. We would like to thank the staff of the “Royal,” for all the kindness and care they shared with Mom during her years with them. We would also like to thank all the Doctors, Nurses and Staff at Guelph General Hospital and Freeport-Grand River Hospital (Kitchener) for their care of Mom over her final few months after her fall.
As per Mom’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be a quiet family inurnment at the Hanover Cemetery in the springtime.
A tree of remembrance will be planted for GG in the Guelph Arboretum.
Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Carmen are asked to consider donations to your local library, Mom loved books and reading, or to your local Food Bank, she never wanted to see anyone go hungry. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Mighton Funeral Home, Hanover.
