Carl E. Rideout
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Carl E. Rideout on Sunday, February 16, 2025, at the age of 81 in Sydney, Nova Scotia.
Carl was born in 1943 in Twillingate, Newfoundland, was raised in the small community of Cottlesville, and moved to Corner Brook, Newfoundland in the early 60s where he met the love of his life, Lorraine. Around this time, Carl began his long business career, mainly in the car rental and sales industry for well over 60 years.
After Carl and Lorraine were married, they moved to Cape Breton where, together, they raised two sons.
When not working or spending time with family and friends, Carl’s other interests included volunteering, where he had a long history of leadership with many charitable organizations, most notably with the Cove Guest Home where he served as a long-time Board Chair. In honour of his many years of advocating for quality senior care in Cape Breton, the Cove opened a second facility named the Carl E. Rideout House in 2019.
Carl enjoyed spending quiet days with Lorriane, visiting with his friends and grandchildren, and hanging out with his puppy pal, Becky. Carl was also an avid biker, hiker, canoeist and kayaker. He prioritized faith, family, friends, hard work, and fun. His bright smile will forever be remembered.
Carl was predeceased by his parents, Hardy and Eliza and brother, Kevin.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 56 years, Lorraine (née Card); sons, Perry aka P.J. (Tracy) of Cole Harbour, NS and Todd (Bena) of Buffalo, NY; siblings, Peggy, Ruby, Goldie, Lloyd (Marg) and Frank (Angela); grandchildren, Jack, Stella, Peter, Maddie and Vienna; and many, many nieces & nephews.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be held Thursday February 27, 2025, in Sydney Memorial Chapel from 3 – 6 pm. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Carl may be made to the Cove Guest Home or to the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
