Parkinson, Bruce Eugene
January 19, 1951 – December 31, 2024
A man who hated formality but still believed in tradition, Bruce lived an extraordinary life; not because he was rich or famous or even did anything profound but because he lived his life to the fullest, with integrity, honestly and hard work, never pretending to be more than he was.
He was a surveyor for more than 50 years, starting on his 16th birthday. He worked rain or shine, hot or cold until the work was done. There is likely nowhere in southern Ontario that hasn’t had a job with Bruce on it and his family can attest to many a jobsite outing on evenings and weekends.
Bruce held many roles in his life too: son of Gene and Louie (Stoneman) Parkinson, son-in-law to Dee and Vicki (Viau) Mercer, youngest brother of Gord (Lorna) Parkinson and Andy (Doreen) Parkinson, brother-in-law to Waneta Mercer, and a beloved uncle and cousin. Still, it was in his role as parent that Bruce showed his magic. Father to Trish (Andy) Bell, Grant (Joanna Ivasiuk) Parkinson and Dean (Michaela) Parkinson and grandpa to Ivy (Spencer Rusk) Bell, Eva Bell and Kailey-Anne Parkinson, he was a mentor, a role model, a cheerleader and a friend whose loss cannot be measured and whose influence will never be undone.
Bruce’s life was only complete because he married his beloved Lorraine (nee Mercer). They were a team unlike many others; both independently strong, as a couple, they were soft and tender; feisty and fun. Their banter could bring a smile to any face, and their ability to creatively solve a problem together was a sight to behold. There was no Bruce without Lorraine, and everyone knew it – especially him. They shared good times and bad, found strength in each other to always be better and knew happiness that few will ever know. If Bruce left her behind after their 52 years together, it was not by choice but by necessity.
Bruce’s legacy is something to which anyone would be proud; proud son of a WWII veteran and war bride, adored husband, beloved dad, cherished boppa/grandad, valued friend and mentor to so many, his loss leaves a profound emptiness in the hearts of all who knew him.
If so inclined, a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or an animal charity/rescue of your choice would be appreciated.
Visitation will be held at the Dods & McNair Funeral Home, Chapel & Reception Centre, 21 First St., Orangeville on Monday, January 6th, 2025 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
A tree will be planted in memory of Bruce in the Dods & McNair Memorial Forest at the Island Lake Conservation Area, Orangeville.
