Brian McGarry Obituary
On December 16th, 2024, Brian John McGarry passed away at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital at the age of 56. He is predeceased by his daughter Misha and survived by his four other children, Andrew, Shailee, Iain, and Helen “Bree”, whom he shared with Danielle, in addition to his parents and siblings.
Brian was born in Scotland on April 3rd, 1968. The first ten years of his life spent there instilled in him an unshakeable national pride and he maintained his citizenship for the rest of his life. He took from the highlands a characteristic sense of bravery and love for history and left behind apart of his heart forever. In 1979, Brian moved to Port Alberni, Vancouver Island. BC, where he spent the rest of his youth making lifelong friendships. He studied Tourism Management at VIU, where he made many more friends and discovered his love for the sea despite his lifelong motion sickness. He took great pride in his position at BC Ferries where he spent nearly thirty years witnessing the beauty of his West Coast.
Brian was a very kind and gentle spirit. This was evident in his years of volunteerism, spending seasons preparing camp for kids at what is now Moorecroft Regional Park and his many years of blood donation. But he was also always available for a kind word, a piece of advice, or a comforting gesture to anyone in need. He was a walking example of treating others with kindness and respect. He lives on through every Bob Ross and Star Trek marathon, every holiday viewing of “It’s a Wonderful Life”, and every beautiful memory he left us with.
If humans lived on love alone, our father would have lived forever. His loss will be felt deeply.
Our thanks and indescribable gratitude to Dr. Jean-Philippe Wallach, who fought tooth and nail for our father until the very end, and Dr. Gregory Kutney for his years of care and support. A memorial service to follow in Summer 20205 when all of Brian’s kids can be present, and all who love him can attend.
