Brian’s Obituary
Brian Guy Randall
July 15, 1947- December 15, 2024
Age:77 years
Long time resident of Peace River
Brian was born in High Prairie AB, the eldest son of Guy and Thelma Randall (Eckardt). The family moved from High Prairie to Grande Prairie, then to Wembley when he was a young boy. He graduated from the Wembley High School, then attended Fairview College graduating with a diploma in Agriculture. He continued to Olds College and graduated with a diploma in Horticulture. It was at Olds College where Brian met Audrey McPhillamey. (Lucky man)
Brian’s employment career started as a Provincial Parks Horticulturalist for the province of Alberta. In 1969, Brian applied for the job as Horticulturalist at the new Peace River Correctional Centre (PRCC). He applied on a whim, not thinking they would hire a new graduate with little experience, but to his surprise he was offered the position. Brian and Audrey were married on December 27, 1969, in Edmonton AB and began their new life in Peace River.
Brian was 22 years old and the first trained Horticulturalist in the area. His work crew was mostly inmates from the Correctional Centre. He grew a massive vegetable garden on the fertile soils of the valley and produced enough vegetables to supply PRCC and other Correctional facilities. Brian managed several greenhouses, growing bedding plants for the Center and community. He took on the task of growing evergreen seedlings for the provincial reforestation program. The grounds of the Correctional Centre were beautifully landscaped and maintained. He taught courses to the public at PRCC, on gardening, house plants, pruning and landscaping to name a few. Brian grew poinsettias, created an orchid club and developed a mushroom cellar. He was instrumental in saving the historical church site and the sacred Aboriginal grounds on the PRCC site.
For many years Brian hosted a live gardening radio show called “Down to Earth” with Dan Mody on CKYL. The popular show also had a call in line for people to ask for gardening advice.
In 1979, Brian was recruited by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE), to become a Labor Relations Officer for the northern zone. His role included the negotiation of employee contracts, representing union members and teaching labor related courses. He retired from AUPE in 2017.
Brian continued to use his horticultural skills by opening a Landscaping business and Garden Centre in Peace River called Peace Horticultural Services with his wife Audrey. The business was successful and operated for 11 years.
Now, as if Brian did not have enough on his plate, he was involved in advocating for a competitive grocery retailer in the area. He was one of the founding members of the Peace Country Co-op. Brian was the president of the Co-op Board of Directors for over 40 years, this was an achievement he was immensely proud of.
While this was going on, Brian did manage to raise a family. He was a very loving, caring, kind and patient husband, father, father-in-law and papa. In Brian’s world, family always came first. Brian and Audrey had 2 daughters: Katrina Dione and Holly April.
Over the years, we have had many fun family reunions and gatherings. Brian played in a band in college and could strum an acoustic guitar, bass guitar or play the drums. He had a beautiful baritone voice which blended perfectly with his siblings at campfire sing songs, weddings and other celebrations.
Brian loved to be with his grandchildren, and he could spend hours putting the hooks back on the fishing lines or watching them drive the lawnmower around the acreage for the 100th time, never losing his patience. It was not unusual to see him sitting by the river, casting his fishing line while smoking his cigar. In the winter, it was ice fishing on a frozen pond regardless of the weather. Brian enjoyed curling, golfing and many social activities with family and friends.
Brian’s legacy will continue through his family: Audrey his wife of 55 years, daughter Katrina Randall-Martin (James) and granddaughters Nya and Aftyn of Peace River, daughter Holly McAreavy (Dean) and grandsons, Kai and Keltyn of Vernon BC.
His Siblings: Donna McPhillamey (Jim) of Grimshaw AB, Alan Randall (Nancy) of Kamloops BC, Linda Kelly of Grimshaw AB, Cam Randall (Sue) of Sooke BC, numerous nieces and nephews and a whole slug of good friends and neighbors. Brian is predeceased by his father (Guy Randall) and mother (Thelma Lenart).
Brian loved the Peace River country and it will be forever a part of his story.
You may remember Brian in the community flipping pancakes at the Co-op during Peacefest. You may have a tree in your yard purchased from his Garden Center or he may have offered you some friendly labor advice.
When you enter the Peace Country Co-op give a smile and nod to Brian.
“You’re at home here.” #4 ♥️
A celebration of life will take place in the summer of 2025.
In Brian’s memory, a post-secondary educational bursary is being established by the Peace Country Co-op. If you wish to donate to the Brian Randall Peace Country Coop Bursary, please call (780) 624-1096 and speak to Cathy or Irene.
