Obituary of Brenda Josephine Coles
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Brenda J. Coles (Praught), age 88, of Wood Islands, PEI, on February 7, 2025. Brenda passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, after living a full, vibrant, and adventurous life.
Partner of Dan Bears. Beloved mother of Genevieve Poole (Randy), Craig Hicken, Garry Hicken (Joan), Donna Hicken, and Harold Hicken. Grandmother of Joshua (Kara), Matthew (Amber), Angelina, Jean-Phillipe, Alexander, Harold, Paul (Andrea), Matthew (Mindy), and Michael (Holly). Loved Great-grandmother to numerous great-grandchildren. Treasured Aunt Bren to many nieces and nephews, both by blood and by affection. Predeceased by her parents Gelasius and Catherine (Walsh) Praught and by her sisters Rita Curran, Paula Curley, Genevieve Laliberte and Bernadette Hughes.
Born in March 1936, Brenda grew up on a farm in Elliotvale, where she learned the value of hard work, independence, and a deep connection to the land and her community. As the middle of five children, and with four sisters by her side, Brenda formed lifelong bonds of love and support with her siblings, which carried on throughout her life.
Brenda was a devoted mother to five children, whom she adored and cherished. Her love for her children extended to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were the light of her life. Brenda’s home was often filled with laughter, warmth, and joy as she loved nothing more than spending time with her friends and family. Brenda was always there with open arms and a generous heart.
Rarely home, Brenda was always on the go. Her passion for life and adventure led her to travel the world, seeking new experiences and forging new friendships along the way. A true social butterfly, Brenda was loved by everyone she met. She had an infectious personality, always ready to share a story, enjoy a good laugh, or dance to the rhythm of a fiddle tune.
In addition to her love for life and family, Brenda was a woman of many talents. In her younger years, she was a skilled trapper, but the majority of her career was spent as a hardworking Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). She worked for many years at the local manor and hospital, and served as the long-time president of the LPN Association, where her leadership and dedication left a lasting impact. She was also known for her charitable spirit, always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Whether it was offering assistance to a neighbour or volunteering, Brenda’s generosity knew no bounds.
Brenda’s legacy of love, laughter, and generosity will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She was truly one of a kind, and will be missed more than words can express.
