Obituary of Brenda Filipetti
It is with unimaginable sadness and heartbreak that we say goodbye to our beloved mother and grandmother, Brenda Joyce Filipetti, who left us at the age of 83 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was a fighter, but needed to rest. She deeply appreciated her family and friends who supported her during her illness, including her friends until the end, Dorothy, Bernie, and Judy. We have lost our biggest cheerleader, a gift to everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. All felt the love she gave, and her absence leaves a hole in our hearts that will never be filled.
Brenda was the loving wife to the late Donald (2014) and the cherished mother of Donna Orlando (James), Allison Vecchio (late Jamie), Mark Filipetti (Sheila), and grandmother to Jamie Marie Orlando (Lue), Marc Orlando (Tracy), Jenna and Jared Vecchio, Cora, Mia, Dana and Garrett Filipetti. Loving sister of Wayne Mitchell (late Vicki), late Nanci Mitchell, Donna Barsanti (Harvey), Ronald Mitchell (Barb), Bruce Mitchell (Debbie), Eva DeBoer (Gary), and Jason Mitchell. Predeceased by her brothers and sisters-in-law Gloria, Evo, Lena Pontoni (Gus), Len (Florence), Dave, Terry (Dorothy) and John and survived by her sisters-in-law Phyllis and Mary.
Brenda was an extraordinary woman, best known for her kindness, quick wit, generosity, and her incredible cooking. Her chiff choff, ravioli, lasagna, homemade pasta, sauce, and meatballs will forever be remembered as the heart of family gatherings. She had a unique ability to make everyone feel at home, offering not just food, but warmth and love with every meal. She was a friend to all—if you ever needed a place to stay, help with organizing, cleaning, or preparing for an event, she was always there, ready to lend a hand. Whether preparing meals, desserts or offering support, she was a constant source of care and kindness. Her dedication extended to her role as a regular visitor to the retirement home where her sister-in-law Vicki stayed.
A lover of animals, Brenda held a special place in her heart for her cats, Oscar and Maggie, as well as her furry grand and great-grandanimals. Her affection for all creatures was a testament to her gentle nature and deep capacity for love.
Brenda loved spending time at her camp in Goulais Bay with family and friends. She was always happy to have friends join her during her time there and cherished the opportunity to spend time with her brothers and sisters and their families. These gatherings were precious memories for her. She was proud of her heritage and always had a story to tell about her shenanigans in Goulais and at the Joseph Homestead where she spent time with her family.
Though we were blessed to have had her with us for 83 wonderful years, it still wasn’t long enough. There were more things we wanted to do and share with her. Her passing has reminded us of the importance of holding our loved ones close, making the most of every moment, and never leaving love unshared or gratitude unexpressed.
While we mourn her loss, we take comfort in knowing that she is at peace, welcomed into Heaven by her husband Donald Filipetti, son-in-law Jamie Vecchio, parents Zakea and Edward Mitchell, sister Nanci Mitchell, sister-in-law Vicki Mitchell, and baby brother Brian, who will be there to greet her with open arms. Left to carry on her traditions, spirit of giving, and unshakable love are her children and grandchildren, who will forever cherish the lessons she taught and the love she gave so freely.
Friends and family are invited to visit on Sunday, March 2, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Service in the Chapel at 1:00 p.m. with Lue Mahaffey officiating. Memorial donations to the Sault Area Hospital Foundation – Cancer Care Fund, the Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society or the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
A special thank you to Dr. Booth and ‘Cindy the Nurse’, Dr. Febbraro, Dr. Evans, and Dr. Dawson for their support and care – you helped her journey be one of dignity and compassion.
Rest in peace, Mom! You will forever be in our hearts, and your legacy will continue through all of us.
