Brenda Mielke Obituary
Passed away peacefully at CHSLD du Pontiac (CAP). Predeceased by her parents Orville Moore and Florence (Addy) Moore, sister Gayle Johnson, brother Lynn Moore and her husband of 53 years Gordon Mielke CPO 1st Class RNC ret’d. Survived by her daughters Kore-Lee (Darrell Cormier), Kimberley (Frank Redmond) and Krista (Mike Beeb), granddaughters Nicole (Adam Young) and Kathie-Lee (Josh Gaul), great-grandchildren Kamden, Liam, Olivia and Emma. As well as several nieces and nephews.
Brenda spent her first few years on a farm in Quebec before moving to Deep River Ontario with her family. She met Gordon in high school and at 18 years old, they married and moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia as Gordon had joined the Navy. After several years in Halifax, they moved to Musquodoboit Harbour. Brenda was very involved in the local community. She volunteered with both the Twin Oakes Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and the Musquodoboit Harbour Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She was a frequent canvasser for the Heart and Stoke Foundation. Although she did not have a fulltime job outside the home she did sell AVON, was a Census Taker and the afternoon assistance at the local daycare.
In 1988 Brenda, Gordon and Krista moved to Norway Bay, Quebec as Gordon had been posted to Ottawa. Brenda was able to meet lots of new people from the area while working parttime with Elke’s Catering. She participated in and also became an instructor for the senior exercise program at Bristol Town Hall. She really enjoyed joining the local ladies on the bus to Ottawa for dinner and a play. She volunteered with Victoria’s Quilt’s making lap quilts for people receiving Chemo at the hospital.
Brenda was an accomplished seamstress, crocheter, knitter, quilter and embroiderer. She enjoyed going to dances and was a member of a square-dancing group in Dartmouth Nova Scotia for many years. Brenda was in a bowling league in Renfrew, Ontario although she would be the first to admit she wasn’t very good, she enjoyed meeting new people. Playing cards, board games and dominos brought out her competitive side, always a graceful loser she preferred to win. Bingo was a game she never understood the appeal of until her first game at CHSLD du Pontiac (CAP) where she won! She would never turn down an invitation to eat out. She liked pets but loved her little dogs the most. Camping was one of her favorite activities, travelling from NFLD to BC. She also enjoyed her trips to Italy, Spain and France.
Brenda considered herself an introvert but would talk to anyone about anything. She would be most upset if the person in the plane seat next to her put in their earphones and didn’t want to chat. She knew many people but had only a few very close friends. They would spend hours on the telephone keeping in touch as most lived in Nova Scotia. Thank goodness for the long-distance phone plan! We all knew her shorthand for where she was “Up Home” meant Deep River, Ontario, “Down Home” meant Nova Scotia and “At Home” was Norway Bay, Quebec.
Her daughters would like to thank the nursing staff and the PAB’s at CHSLD du Pontiac (CAP) who have taken such wonderful and professional care of mother since September 2024. Also thank you to Brenda’s newest friend Marie Gauthier who was able to bring her some joy and laughter.
Funeral service has been entrusted to Hayes Funeral Home, Shawville, Quebec. Interment to follow at a later date. Donations to the CAP, 295 Allan Black Crescent , Shawville, Quebec, J0X 2Y0 fondationcapshawville@gmail.com or a charity of your choice, would be appreciated.
