Boyd Day Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our much-loved husband, father, and grandfather, Boyd Day, who peacefully left us on August 1st, 2025 at the age of 88. Born on September 3rd,1936 in Garnish, NL, he was a devoted husband to Rosalie (O’Rourke), a loving father to Tanya (Emad) and Carla (Glen), and grandfather to Lucas, Evan, Devin, Quinn, and Beri, a bernedoodle, who he looked forward to seeing during her many visits at Tiffany Village Retirement Home. The final surviving member of his immediate family, he was predeceased by his mother, Elizabeth (White) Day, his father Charles Day, brothers, Gervis Day (Kentville, NS), Calvin Day (Garnish, NL) and sister Shirley Day (Garnish, NL), as well as sisters-in-law Florence Day, Ida Roberts, Bernice O’Rourke, and brothers-in-law Joe Roberts and Albert Davis. He is survived by sisters-in-law Helen Davis and Valerie Hill, and brother-in-law Barlow Hill, as well as many nephews and nieces including Sean, Geoff and Blair Day, and Robert, Scot and Colin Day. He was a cherished friend to many including lifelong friends Jean and Sel Warren.
From his early years growing up in Garnish and throughout his life, he was an avid lover of nature and outdoor activities including hiking, camping, gardening, hunting and fishing, spending time at Middle Gull Pond, and berry picking. He often told the story of walking many miles from his home across the barrens as a young teenager to pick 10 gallons of blueberries and selling them for 14 cents a gallon which was the going rate at the time. A strong work ethic was demonstrated from his early years, instilled in him and his siblings by his mother and father, and the challenges of living and growing up in a small outport town in Newfoundland. He completed high school in Garnish, and then moved to St. John’s to complete a post secondary business program. He had a long 40-year career in the insurance industry with Sovereign General Insurance, eventually co-founding Merit Insurance Agency where he continued until his retirement.
He was a dedicated curler and member of the St. John’s Curling Club for over 50 years, representing Newfoundland and Labrador nationally at the Canadian Senior Curling Championships as a member of Damian Ryan’s team on multiple occasions.
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all staff at Tiffany Village Retirement Home, especially the 8th floor staff who provided care to Boyd during his final year.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Visitation will take place on Thursday, August 14th, 2025 at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue, St. John’s, NL from 11am to 9pm. A memorial service will be held in the chapel at Barrett’s Funeral Home on Friday, August 15th, 2025 at 11am with reception to follow.
