Bill Shorten
Obituary
Barnabas William Shorten (Bill), in his 87th year, passed away suddenly at Victoria Hospital on April 27, 2025.
Bill immigrated to Canada from Ireland in his late teens. He worked for Jack Fraser’s Clothiers before following his entrepreneurial drive to open his own business with his good friend George Tyner.
Tyner-Shorten was in business for many years opening several men’s wear shops before Bill transitioned on his own to open Shorten’s of London. It was that business that truly embodied the term “family business,” with every family member working there at some point. Those who weren’t related by blood quickly became family.
He will be deeply missed by his daughters, Linda Jenken (Jeff) and Shannon Shorten (Brad). Bill was a proud Grandad to his adored grandchildren: Curtis, Colin, Grace, Jack, and Harrison. Bill is survived by his former wife, Carrie Shorten. He was predeceased by his parents, Barnabas and Elizabeth Shorten, his brother Jack (Gladys), and his partner Phyllis Hugill. Bill is lovingly remembered by his siblings Lillian (the late Bill), Evie (the late Stuart), and Violet (Christy).
Bill worked hard and loved the world of retail. He also enjoyed playing golf, cards, and, in his retirement, spending countless hours watching sports, especially golf, baseball, and hockey. His daughters and grandchildren always kept track of his favourite golfer, Rickie Fowler’s progress so they could update Grandad at a moment’s notice.
Bill was a skilled ballroom dancer, loved a good joke, and had a laugh so infectious his shoulders would shake. We will carry his laughter, his love, and his amazing sense of humour with us always.
Visitation on Sunday, May 4 from 2-4 at Harris Funeral Home, 220 St. James St. at Richmond, where the funeral service will be conducted on Monday, May 5 at 2 pm. A private family burial will follow. Donations in Bill’s memory can be made to Parkwood Hospital care of St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation, an organization close to his heart during his time serving on the board of directors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you take a loved one to Tim Hortons for a treat in Bill’s honour. He had many happy memories and visits sharing his coffee and an apple fritter with his grandchildren.
