Bill’s Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William Davidson Hargreaves on March 12, 2025, in Winnipeg, MB, at Grace Hospital. He passed peacefully with his three sons and sister by his side.
William was born on September 19, 1953, in Neepawa, MB, to William Garry Hargreaves and Mary Elizabeth Hargreaves (née Davidson). As the eldest of four siblings, Bill spent his early years moving between several communities as his father, Garry, worked for Manitoba Hydro. The family lived in Neepawa, Dauphin, and Boissevain before settling primarily on Strathmillan Road in Winnipeg.
Bill graduated from Silver Heights Collegiate and continued his education at Brandon University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Commerce in 1976.
In September 1979, Bill married Patricia (Patty) Anne Weldon in Winnipeg. Together, they built a loving family, raising three sons: William George (Geordie), born in 1980, Michael James in 1982, and Garry John in 1985. Their journey took them from Winnipeg to Red Lake, ON, in 1988 and then to Brandon, MB, in 1992, where they made their home. Bill began his career at Dunwoody & Company, becoming a Chartered Accountant in 1980. He worked his way through many roles to eventually become a partner in 1992 with BDO Dunwoody in Brandon, MB. In 1996, he and his partner, Bill Pugh, played a pivotal role in merging the Brandon office of BDO Dunwoody with Meyers Norris Penny LLP (MNP).
Bill thrived in his career at MNP, taking on many leadership responsibilities, including serving on the firm’s National Professional Standards Committee. From 2001 until his retirement in June 2009, he was appointed Director of Quality Management for the firm. He was widely respected by colleagues, clients, and partners throughout the firm and was fondly remembered for his dedication and expertise. He also enjoyed many MNP Partner Retreat trips to Europe, creating lasting memories with Patty, many partners, and their spouses.
Beyond his professional life, Bill had many passions. He was an avid curler, playing out of the Fort Rouge Curling Club in Winnipeg and competing in the Northern Ontario Brier playdowns while living in Red Lake. He took great pride in watching his son Geordie compete in provincial and national curling championships. He was also a dedicated hockey dad, cheering on Michael at countless youth hockey games, and he wholeheartedly supported Garry’s golf aspirations—funding memberships and ensuring there was always a fresh supply of Pro V1 golf balls.
In retirement, Bill’s love of sports continued. He enjoyed watching golf, curling, and baseball, especially as a devoted Toronto Blue Jays fan. A fond memory of his was traveling to several Major League Baseball parks, including attending a legendary Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees game—an experience he cherished.
Bill is lovingly remembered by his sons, Geordie (Jana), Michael (Cathryne), and Garry (Shannon); his siblings, Lois Macpherson (John) and Ken; Sister-in-Law Karen; his wife of over 25 years, Patricia; and especially his five grandchildren, Griffin, Addisyn, Harrison, Oaklee, and Sullivan. He is also deeply missed by many family members, friends, nieces, and nephews, all of whom cherished his kindness, humor, and wisdom.
He was predeceased by his father, William Garry Hargreaves; his mother, Mary Elizabeth Hargreaves; and his brother, David Bruce Hargreaves.
In accordance with Bill’s wishes, his final resting place will be the Chukuni River in Red Lake, ON—a place he loved and where he made countless cherished memories.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, March 20th, from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM at First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg, 603 Wellington Crescent Winnipeg, MB
