BARSTEAD, Betty Joan- On February 18, 2025, Betty was called home to be with her Lord and Saviour, at the age of 90. Beloved wife of Lowell for 44 years. Loving mother of Pam Alward (Dennis) of Lower Ridge, NB and Marv Foster (Lori) of Niagara Falls, Jan Schellenberg (Bob) of Red Deer, AB and Howard Barstead of Edmonton, AB. Cherished grandmother of Byron, Wesley and Logan Alward; Matthew (Amanda), Eric (Robyn), Emma and Lauren Foster. Special great grandmother of Daniel, Joshua, a much-anticipated little one coming in May, Gabriel, Sophia and Judah. Dearly loved sister of Ellery `Wallie“ (Vi) and Harold `Budd` Lewis, as well as many nieces and a nephew, all of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
Predeceased by her parents Ellery and Eva Lewis of Nova Scotia; first husband, Hugh Foster; mother-in-law Mary Jamieson, of Belfast County, Ireland; brother Brian Lewis; brothers-in-law Ivor McKay (Delrose) and Lynn Barstead (Maryanne).
Betty had a treasured childhood, growing up in Danvers, NS, learning a life of faith and courage with her mum and dad, experiencing many escapades with her brothers, with whom she remained close over the years. Often, she reminisced about the joy of picking wild blueberries in the fields around their home. As Betty grew up, she left home to complete high school at Bethany Bible College, then decided to train to become a registered nurse, training at the Yarmouth Hospital. Upon completing nurses training, Betty set out on a new adventure, electing to go to Beaver Lodge, Alberta to begin nursing. Here, the Lord brought an Irish immigrant, Hugh Foster, into her life who became her husband. Together they had two children, Pamela and Marven, living happily until his death in 1968. Betty returned home to NS where she raised her family, served the lord in her church, and faithfully worked as an RN, especially enjoying her service with the Victorian Order of Nurses. Once again, Betty was blessed when she married Lowell Barstead in 1980, gaining two more children, Jan and Howard and moving to Ontario. Over the years, Betty and Lowell enjoyed precious times together, going out for coffee and breakfast, travelling east to NB and NS, attending concerts and, of course, picking blueberries together while enjoying one another’s company. The last few years were spent together at Westhills Care Centre in St. Catharines continuing to read God`s Word and pray together, as well as enjoying daily activities at the home.
Special thanks are extended to all the staff at Westhills, but especially Jessica, Tammy and Ariana (now studying in Ireland).
Betty wanted everyone to know the truth of this verse: “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” (John 14:6)
Betty is resting at Morse & Son Funeral Home, 5917 Main Street, Niagara Falls, where her family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 25th, 2025 from 12-1 o`clock. Funeral service will follow immediately in the chapel at 1 pm. Interment to follow at Fairview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sus Christian School, 45 Chapman Drive, Sus, New Brunswick E4E 1M4.
