Obituary
Elizabeth Margaret Grieve ‘Betty’
Passed away peacefully April 9th while the sun came up at Trillium Court Kincardine in her 102nd year. While there is no tragedy in the death of a 101 year old woman who lived a wonderful, healthy, love filled life; grief is unavoidable. She will be terribly missed by her family, friends and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
Betty grew up in Perth, Scotland. When WWII began she volunteered and served with the Royal Auxillary Territorial Services in England. She met her Canadian boy, Gordon Grieve (predeceased 1981) when he visited Perth on leave from Royal Canadian Ordinance Corps . They sent love letters back and forth for years. After the war they decided to get married and Betty moved to Canada to start their life together. While she was young, only 24, she was excited to establish their home and start their family. They raised their family on the Grieve farm which she came to love and it truly was her favourite place.
She leaves behind her son Sandy (Dale) Grieve of Barrie , David Grieve (predeceased 2023) and her daughter in law Connie Grieve who will all miss her dearly. Her Grandchildren: Janice Hawrelak of Midland, Michigan. Linda Yenko (Ren) of Barrie. Lindsay Kaake (Kelly) of Port Elgin, Jessica Murray (Tyler) of Kincardine. Great grandchildren Kali Yenko, Gracelyn, Gage and Rosalye Sousa, Chloe and Peyton Murray will miss her dearly.
Betty lived for visits with her grandkids and great grandkids, always made everyone in her presence feel special. Her smile would light up a room. She was a religious woman and believed that when it was her time the good Lord would take her, “what is for me shall not go past me”.
Travelling home to Scotland was Betty’s favourite trip to take. Her family hopes she has made her way back there and is having a stiff scotch with her brother Sandy and sister Ursilla. She loved a good dinner of fish and chips, ending with a soft ice cream at the beach with Connie.
She will be missed by many and especially by those who enjoyed her cookies, pies, and most importantly, her warm hugs and words of encouragement. She has left a mark on each of their hearts of her family and instilled core life lessons that they will carry with them forever.
A special thanks to the staff at Elgin Lodge Port Elgin for the years of care. A special thanks to the Trillium Court Long Term Care Kincardine who went above and beyond this last year to keep Betty comfortable, happy and full of chocolate milk, tea and cookies.
Betty, Grandma, Mum, Mom and Grammy will be missed by all. She will be forever loved and never forgotten.
“Bye for now”
A private family graveside burial will be scheduled in the coming months.
In lieu of flowers donations to Knox Presbyterian Church Burgoyne or Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
