It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Bernard Edwin Amell (Sr.), affectionately known as Bernie, on June 18, 2025. A man of immense character, strength, and quiet kindness, Bernie’s presence left a lasting imprint on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Born on April 30, 1939, to David and Mary Amell in McDonalds Corners, Ontario, Bernie was raised on a small farm near Snow Road. Life on the farm instilled in him a strong work ethic and deep resilience, qualities that would shape the course of his life. At just fifteen, Bernie set out on his own, seeking work and a future beyond the family farm—an early testament to his courage and determination.
In 1964, Bernie began a distinguished 36-year career with Correctional Service Canada, serving as a Correctional Officer. His dedication, fairness, and integrity earned him the respect of his colleagues and the admiration of many. He retired in 2000, leaving behind a legacy of service and commitment.
By the age of 21, Bernie had already embraced the role he cherished most—that of a husband and father. He was a devoted partner to his late wife, Sherlon (Riddell), and a loving father to his three children. Bernie led his family with quiet strength, gentle guidance, and an enduring love that never wavered.
He leaves behind his children: Edwin (Leeanne), Bradley (Deborah), and Stephenie (Ken), as well as his treasured grandchildren: Jesse (Ashley), Shane (Sophie), and Rebecca (Kendra) Amell, and Calvin (Jessica) and Allie Robertson. His family was his pride and joy, and he delighted in being a constant and caring presence in their lives.
Bernie is also survived by his siblings Lennard (Josie) and Elaine (the late Robert) Plumridge. He was predeceased by his brothers William (the late Marie), Joseph (the late Marie), James (Judy), Michael (the late Sandy), Gerald (Julia), and his sister Veronica (the late Malcolm) MacNaughton.
He will be fondly remembered by his extended family, including his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Gilbert (Helene) Riddell, Carolyn (the late Lyle) North, Pauline (the late Victor) Sargeant, and Janice (Rick) Hartley.
Bernie will also be deeply missed by his lifelong friends, who shared in his journey, offering strength and support through the years and filling his life with countless wonderful, unforgettable moments.
A Rite of Committal with prayers will take place at St. Columbkill Cemetery, 4492 Watsons Corners Rd., McDonalds Corners, Ontario, on Tuesday, June 24, 2025 at 12:30 pm., where Bernie will be laid to rest in the land where his journey began. A reception will follow.
His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
