Obituary of Bernice Mae Journeay
Bernice Mae Journeay (Richards)
March 5, 1948 – January 25, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Bernice Mae Journeay (Richards) of Aylesford, Nova Scotia, at the age of 76, who peacefully passed away on January 25, 2025, in hospice care after a courageous battle with complications of diabetes.
Bernice was born on March 5, 1948, in Glace Bay, NS. Her early life’s journey took her across Ontario, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick, where in 1966 she met the love of her life, Eric Journeay, in Gagetown, NB. They married on July 5, 1969, and enjoyed a life of adventure, moving across the country with Eric’s military career.
In 2003, Bernice and Eric returned to Nova Scotia to enjoy retirement after spending many years in Alberta raising their family. Their retirement was filled with cherished travels across Canada and Europe, creating beautiful memories together.
Bernice actively supported the Atlantic Branch of the Black Watch (RHR) of Canada Association as Treasurer. She was also a dedicated member of the Kingston Lions Club for many years. Her community spirit and warm heart touched many lives.
Bernice is survived by her devoted husband of 55 years, Eric; her children, Doug (Rafael) and Julie (Darcy); and her faithful dog, Trixie. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.
Bernice was predeceased by her parents, John and Alice Richards (Tucker); her brothers, Roy and Stanley; her sister, Blanch (Marcelin) Clark; as well as Eric’s parents, Richmond and Loretta Journeay (Schnare) and Velma Beazley (Schnare).
The family extends heartfelt thanks to all who offered love and support during Bernice’s final days. Special gratitude goes to Jackie and Gerald for their kindness, Debbie, and the VON nurses for their care, Lisa-Marie for all the support and visits, the nurses at Valley Hospice, and the Salvation Army Church congregation in Kentville for their prayers and support.
Bernice’s greatest pride was her family, who brought her immeasurable joy. She will be deeply missed but forever celebrated for her steadfast love, quiet strength, and the memories she created with those she held dear.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held in the spring in the Salvation Army Church in Kentville. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations may be made to The Valley Hospice Foundation in Kentville, NS, where Bernice received compassionate care in her final days, or to Fidelis House in Kentville, NS, a charity supported by the Black Watch. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, 34 Coldbrook Village Park Dr., Coldbrook, NS, B4R 1B9 (902-679-2822).
