Bernice A. Bear Obituary
Peacefully, after a lengthy illness, it is with deep regret that we announce the death of Bernice Bear (nee Wesley), beloved wife, mother, aunt, family member, friend, and educator. Bernice passed on February 27, 2025 at Grace Hospital at the age of 58 years.
Bernice is survived by her husband Michael, her daughter Brandy (Jonathan), her sons Ridge, Michael Junior, and Augustine, as well as her cherished grandchildren Kingsley and Belle. She was also survived by her siblings Ronald, Barbara, Lula (Jeff), Mary, Helen (Robin), Frank, John (Andrea), and Mary Anne, as well as her many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her father Frank, her mother, Salome, her older brothers Stanley and Joseph, and most recently, her nephew Troy.
Bernice was a remarkable woman whose love for learning and commitment to her family was evident throughout her life. She earned her Bachelor of Education degree while raising a family, a testament to her work ethic, passion, and resilience. She began her career supporting Indigenous youth through the Fresh Start Program in the Winnipeg School division. She continued to educate and mentor youth while working as an Indigenous Education Consultant and a classroom teacher.
Bernice had a deep joy for travelling, often embarking on road trips to places like Vancouver, Las Vegas, New Brunswick, Arizona, and her home community of Lac Seul, Ontario. No matter where she was – whether exploring new destinations or at home – her family always came first.
A celebration of Bernice’s life will be held at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, March 4th at the Aboriginal Funeral Chapel, 724 Selkirk Avenue in Winnipeg.
Bernice will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. May she rest in peace, knowing that her dedication to education and to her family has left an enduring impact on the world.
