Bernard Mackin Obituary
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear father Bernard A. Mackin, the husband of the late Lillian M. (Danells) Mackin, on March 9th, 2025, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born on September 12th, 1932, he was the youngest child of the late Daniel and Mary Luella Mackin. Our father was a man of great faith and a graduate of St. Vincent’s High School. Dad worked many jobs before starting his career as a Property Assessor for GNB. Dad was a well-known athlete and official in Saint John and surrounding areas. He was inducted into the Greater Saint John Sports Hall of Fame in 1993 and the New Brunswick Softball Hall of Fame in 1997. Dad was well respected by his teammates and the players he umpired for. The late sportswriter Bill Bailey once shared “Your father was a class act on and off the field”.
Dad loved spending time at the racetrack with his father and brothers in his early years but shone on the baseball diamond. He was a legendary pitcher for many teams over the years. We have great memories of Dad flooding a rink every winter for us to skate on and playing football in the yard with our cousins and neighbourhood kids. Dad had a fondness for anything his family would bake or cook, he especially loved a good cookie.
We would like to thank our cousins Dan, Theresa, Andrew, Kevin, and Kathy, along with other family and friends, for the endless support of our parents over the years. Our parents had such great love and appreciation for all those who helped in their journey.
To the staff and families at the Loch Lomond Village “Willow House”, thank you. Your care, kindness, and compassion warmed our hearts and will always be remembered.
Bernie leaves behind: his brother Greg; his son Patrick (Nadine); his daughters: Maureen (Tim) and Kelly (Shawn); and his six granddaughters whom he was very proud of: Lauren, Hannah, Lindsay, Sarah, Brooke and Addison. Along with his wife and parents, Bernie was predeceased by his son Sean; his brothers William, Joseph, Gerry, Paul and his sisters Margaret and Lillian (Honey). Arrangements have been entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John, NB E2J 2G3 (506-646-2424). Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, from 2 – 4PM and 6 – 8PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Stella Maris Catholic Church on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at 11AM. Interment will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to Loch Lomond Village Recreation Department and ALS Society of Canada would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences are available at: www.fundyfuneralhome.com
