Bernadette
McFarlane
September 30, 1954 – March
13, 2025
“The
world changes from year to year,
our lives
from day to day,
but the love
and memory of you,
shall never
pass away.”

Kenny, Jennifer, and Jeff Richardson are
deeply saddened to announce the peaceful passing of their mother,
Bernadette (Bern) McFarlane at the age of 70 years of Freshwater,
Placentia.
The daughter of the late Gerald and Jennie
McFarlane of Port Royal, Placentia Bay; it’s there where
Bern and her siblings embarked on their own personal journeys of
life.
Bern will be forever loved and remembered by special friend
of 23 years, Andrew Traverse, her children; Kenny (Crystal), Jennifer
(Jonathan Galgay) and Jeff (Nicole), and the absolute joys of her
life, her grandchildren; Matthew, Mason, Owen, Sara, Emma, Jenna, and
Jax.
Also leaving to mourn are her sisters, Phyllis (John
Bartlett), Anita (Gerry Byrne), Wanda (Maurice Martin), and brothers,
Brendan (Cecilia), Bill (Eleanor Traverse), and as well as a close
circle of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends, especially
the Traverse family of Ferndale. She will also be dearly missed by her
former colleagues at Sobeys, neighbors, and her friends from the
Breakwater Farm and Market.
Bern is predeceased by her sister Donna (Cyril Spurvey),
brother Hank, and the father of her children, Kenneth Richardson, as
well as extended members of the McFarlane and Richardson
families.
Bern and Andrew enjoyed their time together- berry picking,
working in their gardens, attending hockey games, and of course
enjoying many special occasions with family and friends. Mom
also thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her siblings, particularly
the many walks throughout Argentia with her sisters. Reminiscing of
old times and being a constant support for each other – mom
truly valued those special moments in ways you will never know, and
for that we are so grateful.
Mom was our beacon and strength, and right now, none of us
are quite sure how exactly we’ll move on without her. As a
mother, she was our backstop, a calm and nonjudgemental witness to our
triumphs and stumbles. She was always, always there, welcoming us back
home no matter how far we had journeyed, with that deep and abiding
love.
As a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, neighbor and
friend to so many, she was beloved beyond words by countless others
whose lives were enhanced by her presence. We will all miss her
greatly, and we wish she were here to offer us some perspective, to
mend our heavy hearts with a laugh and a dose of her
wisdom.
Her wisdom came off as something she was born with, but in
reality, it was hard-earned, fashioned by her deep understanding that
the world’s rough edges could always be sanded down with a
little grace.
As always, she shared her insight and wisdom widely, but she
was especially dedicated to supporting her family. As always, she was
right. That’s how we remember her. But she also left
instructions for how she wanted her legacy to be honored –
through her children and grandchildren.
What is also true – although she adamantly denied
it – is that there was and will be only be one Bern
McFarlane. In our sadness, we are lifted up by the extraordinary gift
of her life, and we will spend the rest of ours trying to live up to
her example.
As an expression of sympathy, we ask that you plant a tree or
flower this spring while remembering her smile or be gracious as she
was and extend an act of kindness to someone in their time of
need.

are not the stars, but rather openings in heaven
where the
love of our lost ones pours through
and shines
down upon us to let us know they are
happy”
