Ben passed away peacefully on March 7th, 2025, at the Misericordia Health Centre.
Dad was born on November 8th, 1934, in Langevin MB. He was predeceased by his parents, Dietrich and Maria, his wife Helen (nee Wiebe) his 2nd wife Pat (Wade nee Rooke) his brother Dick, sister Nettie, 7 brothers in-law-and
3 sisters in law. He leaves to mourn his loss his 4 sons, Gerald, aka Fritz (Julie), Glenn (Marilyn), Greg (Dale), Gord (Teresa). Grandchildren Jordan (Jenn), Tyler (Ashley), Carleigh (Diana), Katrina (Zac), Brittany (Tony), Keelin, and 11 great grandchildren.
Dad grew up near St. Joseph with his parents and grandparents. They lived on a 160-acre farm until 1945, when sadly his parents lost the farm due to the depression and war. They then moved to a farm between St. Jean and Lettellier where dad and his dad worked for an agricultural dealership. They moved few more times and then settled in the Steinbach area in 1950.
Dad helped the Dickson’s who lived near Morris when the 1950 flood hit. Dad hoed beets in the summer and continued to work for the Dickson’s until 1955. That summer he met mom at a roller-skating rink in Winnipeg, and a few short months later on October 22, 1955, they were married. Mom persuaded dad to get a vocation, so he went to MIT, a technical college in Winnipeg. There he learned the art of cutting meat. He started his meat cutting career at Reidigers Hardware store on Henderson Hwy. and was lured over to Penner Foods a short while later. He worked for Penner Foods until he retired in 1994.
In 1998 mom passed away and Dad became quite lonely and sad. This lasted for a few years until one day, while on one of his walks he ran into Pat. His happiness came back and soon they were married on February 22nd, 2003. I’m sure it was Pat’s smile that attracted him to her.
Dad loved to travel, and he did a lot of it after he retired. First with mom, and then with Pat. They travelled to all 5 continents and explored as they went, using planes, trains, automobiles, and cruise liners. Once the travelling stopped Pat and dad spent a lot of time at Pat’s cottage and watching the grandkids play various sports.
Dad spent his last few years at Lindenwood Manor, where he met many new and old friends. He enjoyed the activities at Linden and was very proud to be there. They treated him like a king.
Special thanks goes out to the care workers at the Misericordia Hospital.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 28, 2025, at Sargent Avenue Mennonite Church, 926 Garfield St., Winnipeg.
In lieu of flower donations can be made to MCC at mcc.org/donate
We will all miss you, Dad.
