Obituary of Barbara Thomas Woehl
Barbara Thomas Woehl
Beloved wife of Robert (Bob), dear mother of Pam Thomas (Jeff Connoy -d), David Thomas (Sheri Williams) and Linda (Dan) Cybulski. Grandmother of Stephen (Sherry) Cybulski, Jessica (Adam) Muir, Jordan Thomas, Lexi Thomas and Holly Connoy, and great grandmother to Gideon, Isaac, Aaron, Anna, Jamie and Liya. She will be sadly missed by her sister Joyce (Wendell) Fisher, sister-in-law Cheryl (Larry -d) Barkley and brother-in-law Richard (Darlene) Woehl as well as many nieces and nephews. Pre-deceased by her parents Eleanor and Philip Cooper, in-laws Doug Woehl, and Diane and George Athoe.
Early in life, Barb was a member of Grace United Brethren in Christ church in Sherkston; then later, the Garrison Road Brethren in Christ where she brought her musical talents to others by singing in the choir. Barb graduated from RCBHS with a commercial certification. She was honoured to be the valedictorian of her graduating year. Barb started her work career in Brodies’ Drug Store as a pharmacist assistant. Her first full-time job was as secretary in the Ridgeway Municipal Office and later came a secretarial position at Bertie Senior School. Barb also touched the lives of many people throughout her 35+ year career at Fleet Canada, as she rose from a position as a secretary to head of Human Resources.
Following a life-changing stroke in 2008 she became involved with the Brain Empowerment Team (BET). Before her stroke, Barb was first mate on many boating trips with Bob and all their friends in the boating community. In the winters they spent time in Florida. Barb kept busy by gardening, cooking gourmet meals for friends and family, teaching computers to seniors, volunteering with the literacy council, learning Spanish, and biking with the Turtles group. Barb was also an avid photographer, reader and world traveller, and visited many different countries. After her stroke, even though her vision and mobility were gone, Barb took up braille, and spent hours listening to books and keeping on top of news and current events.
A very special thank you to the PSWs from March of Dimes for the many years of wonderful service.
Barb will be terribly missed by everyone who was touched by her life and moved by her patience, and love. Friends are invited to join the family at Benner Funeral Services, 1105 Benner Avenue in Fort Erie, on Monday January 13, 2025 for a time of visitation from 11 am – 12 pm. A funeral service to honour her life will take place in the funeral home chapel at 12 pm, and a rite of committal will take place at 2:15 pm at Beaches Emmanual Lutheran Cemetery, on beach road in Sherkston.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to March of Dimes, CNIB, Heart & Stroke or charity of your choice, and would be appreciated by her family.
