It is with great sadness and much love that we say goodbye to Barb.
She passed away in Nanaimo, BC on January 26, 2025, after a short battle with lung disease. She was predeceased by her husband Grant Coy in 2014 and her parents Edwin and Mary MacKay. Barb is survived by her three children Debbi, Darren (Sherry) and Dana, five grandchildren Nicole (National), Eryn (Nash), Ty (Jenna), Cody, and Dillon, four great grandchildren Reinen, Ropen, Ryden and Rhett, sister Sheila (Neville) and brother Ed (Judy), as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Barb was born on December 18,1944 in Victoria, BC. Her family moved from Victoria to Turner Valley, Alberta when she was a young girl. Later on relocated to Calgary, her heart was always in Victoria. Barb met the cowboy of her dreams, Grant they were married in 1965. Barb and Grant raised their three children on an acreage in High River, AB. Barb was involved in her children’s sports, hockey, figure skating and horse activities throughout the years and was the face behind the front desk at Grant’s Small Engines. Some of her favorite times were spent on their annual family vacations to Vancouver Island. Grant and Barb moved to Nanaimo BC in 1992. The memories of times spent on Parksville Beach were very near and dear to her and that was where she always took her grandkids when they came to visit. She was proudly involved with the Nanaimo Arts Council, the Nanaimo Tozan Kiln (1995), Nanaimo Rhododendron Society, the Nanaimo Bridge Club, Literacy Nanaimo, and the Newcomers Club where she met lifelong friends Diane Wade and Phoebe Hamilton. Playing bridge, doing floral design, gardening and rhododendrons were passions of hers.
Most would agree that her title of “Grandma” and “Gigi” are ones she was most proud of in life. Due to them all living far away, she took great pleasure in FaceTiming with them as much as possible. Her duty as Gigi to her four great grandchildren was taken very seriously. She requested weekly updates with “those little Jaspers” as she called them.
The family would like to thank the caring and loving staff at the Nanaimo Regional Hospital 5th floor & Palliative Care Unit who took pleasure in her humour and cheekiness during her stay.
A Celebration of Barb’s Life will be held on at the Meadowbank Hall on Saturday, February 22nd at 2:00 p.m.
Caring for the family is Lyle Reeves Funerals of High River (Craig Snodgrass) 403.652.4242.
