Barbara “Jane” Krilyk Obituary
Krilyk, Barbara “Jane” RN, BScN, Dip (PH), M.Ed
March 31, 1946-February 22, 2025
Passed away February 22, 2025, after a brief illness, Jane leaves Ron, her devoted husband of 54 years (in Millgrove), her brothers Robert (Lorraine), and William (Dorothy) in Nova Scotia, and her many nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends. Jane is predeceased by her parents, Ray and Peggy Henderson of Pictou County, Nova Scotia.
At the age of 17, Jane left Nova Scotia to enter nursing school. Jane was a graduate of the Toronto General Hospital School of Nursing, and went further to receive a Diploma in Public Health (Dalhousie University, Halifax), a BScN (University of Windsor), and a Masters in Education (Brock University). Jane and Ron settled in Hamilton in 1972. She worked as a Supervisor and then Coordinator for Standards of Nursing Practice (Juravinski Hospital), a Health Education Specialist (St. Joseph’s Hospital), a Quality Assurance Coordinator (McMaster Medical Centre), a Case Manager (CCAC), and then retired from a Quality Assurance position at McMaster’s Department of Family Medicine. Her professional contribution was vast. She developed and taught a Nursing Process program (Mohawk College, Continuing Education), created professional resources for frontline nurses in care planning and patient education, authored a book, ‘Special Babies’ (a Ministry of Health and Longterm Care project) and a booklet, ‘The WRITE Stuff’ for producing patient education materials. Jane was known to use the expression, ‘If you fail to plan, you plan to fail,’ in her motivation and dedication for excellence in professional patient care.
Beyond her expert professional contributions, Jane was well known among neighbours, family, and her loving friends as an avid crafter, cook and baker, traveller, gardener, and very ardent bridge player. She showed unwavering kindness to those in need and leaves a legacy of love to all who knew her. Special thanks to the physicians and nursing staff in the ER and 8West (Hamilton General), St. Peter’s Hospital Palliative Care, PSW Ryan Hilts, and Jane’s circle of friends who, with Ron, supported Jane’s comfort ensuring a calm and peaceful death (Janet Rush, Linda Hilts, Esther Green, Jane Cudmore, Connie Inouye, Dauna Crooks, Lynn Hryniuk, Cathy Able).
A celebration of Jane’s life will occur at a garden party in the spring at her home in Millgrove. Cremation has occurred.
Arrangements entrusted to Kitching, Steepe and Ludwig Funeral Home, Waterdown, where the Tribute Wall is available for thoughts and messages to the family.
