Obituary of Averil Thompson
Averil Thompson (née Jenkins) of Beaverlodge, AB, formerly of Cwmgwrach, Wales, passed away unexpectedly at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at the age of 80 years.
Averil was born on March 21, 1944, and grew up in Wales. She attended Glamorgan College of Education and graduated in 1965. Her marriage to Peter Thompson took place on August 21, 1965, and they then taught for one year in Birmingham, England before immigrating to Canada in August. She went on to continue her education at the University of Alberta and the Grande Prairie Regional College.
Averil taught for the County of Grande Prairie until she retired in 1992. Her first post was for grade two in Beaverlodge where she taught for two years before transferring to Beaverlodge High School where her primary responsibility was the Home Economics department. Her final transfer before retirement was to Wembley Elementary School where she taught grade one.
Averil’s love and concern for her students was only eclipsed by her love for her daughter Caitlin who was born in 1983. She became the quintessential “dance mom” who drove countless miles over many years.
Averil had a love for sewing and was a hobby until her passing. She spent many years taking English riding lessons and regretted not having the time to pursue this passion further. She was a lifelong dog lover and Molly and Bella are missing her greatly.
She will be sorely missed by her husband Peter; daughter Caitlin: son-in-law Kurt Stamback; grandchildren Evan and Rhian; along with a multitude of family in both Canada and the UK.
A memorial tea will be organized at a future date, with details to be provided by the funeral home, local newspaper, and through personal invitations.
